Tony, only one of the exhaust pipes on the bike is functional, the other is for a ridiculous stylistic exercise only. This is truly one of the dumbest things that BMW has ever done, next to removing the rear circlip on the Type 247 transmissions back in 1980!

Get your hands on the spare exhaust pipe you were offered as soon as possible, this was a very expensive aftermarket fix for this stupid fiasco. Kit allows you to achieve fully operational dual exhaust system and the F650GS will then run great at all RPMs!!!

https://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/ Tony, as I mentioned to you on by phone and by private message: Join BMW MOA Forum as soon as possible. Dues are $40 yearly and you get a discount on your BMW tattoo.
Don,

This is great news! I was so worn out from riding sick- I tried to follow the exhaust from the cylinder, it is covered up under

padding and covers that I just went inside and passed out. Why would I need another forum, when I have you to answer my

stupid questions? :yahoo:  :p

The bike is such a whimp in first gear and idle- it is like starting out in 3rd gear. I did not even look at the piece for the

exhaust- is it like a "Y" splitter?

BTW... Do I get some kind of credit with BMW MOA for living in Germany for 2 years? :p

Tony, where'd you live at in Germany? I lived in Augsburg, Bavaria for all of 1969-70. Tony, if you want to send me an e-mail at [email protected] I'll then forward it on to FJRay S., Ray definitely knows these bikes; I have never owned a BMW single.

A dummy exhaust system just to look 'cool'?

Amazing.

Tony - does the bike have good power when running at highway speeds?

Easy to make passes and what not?

Trying to determine if it's just a low rpm problem or lack of power across the rpm range.

My thoughts exactly. In fact, from the thread title, I thought we were talking about a twin. But now I see that's new this year. Why would they keep the same model name for a different bike?

It's amazing the stuff you learn hanging around this place.

GS Exhaust & Exhaust Modifications FAQ

Edit: What's even funnier is that the new F650 GS twin has a single can and the old F650 GS thumper has two cans!

The bike is great on the highway! I was pleasantly surprised by this. I took it to 90 mph and she

still had more to give. Passing was good- plenty lift off with throttle. Idle sucks, response in gears

1-3 really lack. It is like being 2 gears to high... like a bogging effect.

And about the F650GS ****... I found out you should research a bike BEFORE placing a bid on ebay.

I was under the impression the "F" was for faster (2 Cylinders) I placed a bid, was outbid instantly by

an automatic bid, went to work and forgot about it, only to come home to find that I had "One item to pay for"

The auto bidder retracted their bid.

This will be a great bike if I can solve this issue.

And after this ride with the stock seat... we really need to talk about a membership for me in your CBA.

Good site...

The funny thing is my bike has 2 open ports for exaust- the exhaust runs direct to the Dummy can- then is directed

over to the working can. How much compression is lost in that process? Could the previous owner be midway through

a "Conversion" and the bike just plain is loosing compression? Why is it only effecting the bike at idle and low speeds?

I can see my next reading assignment(s) :angry2:

You wanted a 2008 or newer F 650 GS. Why didn't BMW designate the model 'G'??

That would be too simple. The G 650 GS is a single. :D

Edit: ... and the BMW confusion continues... Guess what the displacement of the new F 650 GS is. "798 cc" Check it out: <Link>

When does 800 equal 650??

Tony, I love having IBA members in the CBA!

You want a number? I even reserved the top 25 or so strictly for IBA members!

And about the 800cc 650? Sure makes the '650' run strong, huh?

https://www.bmwmoa.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31826&highlight=F650GS+problems Tony, I sent an e-mail to FJRay in Oregon and my dirt bike riding buddy Phil H. in Montana; and I copied you with the letters. Ray has worked a lot on the Rotax 650 singles and Phil has ridden his F650GS extensively in Mexico with me. I will copy this thread to my AZ Beemers Club.

Check out this link above. A BMW owner/rider from Bogota, Columbia was having problems similar to yours. The culprits were the charcoal canister and wiring harness.

I don't think I can add much here. The newest BMW single I worked on was a 97 and it ran fine until the piece of **** air cleaner gave up in alaska and the engine ran on dirt. After it ran out of compression, I drove up to Watson lake to retrieve it and the owner.

It was THE most expensive single cylinder engine I ever worked on. 1100.00 in parts just for the top end. It was the F650 Funduro. I never understood why they used two carbs on a single but I never liked koolaid anyway.

I would love to own a BMW as long as it was a R100 or older. :D
