Bemmers are great bikes, Ive been to BMW rallys & seen BMW with 200,000 miles on them & never had to turn A bolt on the motor!!! HARD TO BEAT THAT!!!

If your bike fails, your bike fails. The specific failure is little consolation as you load it onto the truck for a trip to the ER.
Not really. I consider it terribly important. For example, is it: (in order of pissed-off-ed-ness)

1. Just a plain "act of $deity" - A nail in your tire, or a deer jumps out of the bushes. You can plan for some of these, by carrying a patch kit, but not all, and either you can fix it, or that's game over. Not much to gain by getting high blood pressure over it.

2. Something that just broke? - Your shifter lever snapped, and you're screwed, so that's life. Try again next year. Still not a happy camper about it. This is very very rare if you do proper inspections and maintenance, otherwise it's a #4.

3. The mfgr ****** up? - BMW FD failures, or FJR ignition switch failure - You're really pissed because the mfgr "let down the team" and it shouldn't have happened, especially in a high-dollar machine.

4. You ****** up? - You didn't adjust the chain right, and it came off and munched things, or you left a bolt loose and something important fell off or got bent. You're really REALLY pissed because YOU "let down the team" by being a careless moron and it was totally preventable.

There's a cause behind the bike failing, and it's important.

Are any of them R1200GS? How about a bolt on their final drive?

Uh huh. Every time I've heard "200,000 miles on them & never had to turn a bolt on the motor" on anything (car or bike) - it turned out to be a different situation on closer inspection. (total ********, in other words)

I had a friend that always said that about his CX-500, and another that said the same about his '63 'Vette when I knew better, that those machines got their due share of money and care, and that the CX had been torn down for transmission repairs. I knew a guy that said that about his BMW as well, and I knew it's been in for various valve train and final drive updates. Of course, *HE* never turned a bolt on the motor, but his dealer sure did.

well, I've re-thought my previous shaft drive requirement, and have opened up my search to chain drive as well. There's no way I'll be disciplined enough to service it every 600 miles, but I'll do it every once in a while. I may go through chains/sprockets more quickly, but whatever.

This obviously opens up a WHOLE lot more options, and the original idea was to replace the FJR with Big Beemer. For the same amount of financial "investment," I can keep the FJRs and get something like a V-Strom (again, I won't be doing any serious off-roading, just getting off the pavement).

Honestly, the potential reliability concerns were less important to me than the expensive parts and service. That was the deal killer for me.

I do appreciate all the comments here, it certainly helped in my decision.

...Now I just need to save up the cash. Oh, and figure out how to fit 4-5 bikes plus the car into the garage.
