Gosh! I guess I better sell my `02 R1150RSA and tell my son to offload his `94 R1100RSA. Even after 150k miles, I guess we could get hurt, huh...

Oh, and I'll be sure and tell all my customers and other Beemer riding friends to get rid of their horrible bikes based on statistically insignificant data.

Thanks for the heads up!

In reality failure of the rear drive on BMW is not a rare thing at all. the picture is not what usualy happens. on the next generation older units the large ball bearing that supports the ring gear is what usualy goes. Ball bearings don't take thrust nearly as well as a tapered roller bearings and will fail much sooner under load. I have repaired a number of them and it isn't a big deal as long as the bearing hasn't exploded yet. The replacement from BMW is around 200.00 and you have to get it from them but the rest is easy.

A guy I rode with 2 weeks ago had some parts in the rear end go out in NW Nebraska 2 or 3 months ago on his way to the BMW rally in Washington. He was 800 miles from home and wound up buying a used pickup, which he was thinking about anyway, in Alliance, NE to get his BMW somewhere where he could get the parts that he needed to fix it. The fix was easy, just had to have the part to do it.

He was told that this is not an uncommon thing on the bike that he has. He still likes his BMW's and has a bunch.

The flame (no pun intended) is a nice touch, you have to admit.....LOL.

Uhm... isn't checking and verifying the drive unit part of the service on the Beamer? There's perhaps reasons why the BMW service is a bit more...?
Ummm no... it's a sealed unit and BMW touts it as " maintenance free ".
That's ass when they're falling apart. I hear *just* enough "rear drive unit failure" complaints to make me believe it's more than just the occasional fluke. That sucks :(

We have ticking occasionally that doesn't strand us or RARE Metzler issue, they have rear drives that occasionally strand folks , other bikes have other things. Whenever a perfect bike comes out....you can bet it well sell well.

They (BMW owners) have a great club and devoted following and will endure almost anything to be part of the collective. I have a few friends in that tribe -- both GS1150 owners lost their rear ends. I also have a few friends with FJRs (other than the fine folks on this forum, that is) -- no tickers. I know that statistically that doesn't mean a thing -- unless...."it's your ox being gored". :(

Yes, indede, Metzler ishoes ar vari rair! :bleh: ;)

I don't question the validity of rear drive failures but I have to wonder if this photo is actually what it claims to be. Come on this thing had to be screaming "something is F@#$ed up" before got to this point. My bike can't make a peep before I'm poking and prodding to make sure everything is kosher.
