I couldn't read the entire article but what I was able to read didn't seem to be a cause for alarm.....at least not any more than when I went for a ride this morning.

This article misses the point. A similar one in the Wall Street Journal cites the fact baby boomers are disproportionately represented in motorcycle fatalities. The NHTSA statistics show old guys are involved in a lot of the fatalities, but the real problem here is they are associated with not using helmets in the 31 states that have rescinded helmet safety laws, and alcohol is another significant contributor to fatal motorcycle accident.

So if you're an old guy that does not wear a helmet, and you choose to drink and ride, your number might just come up sooner than later.

And in case you have not noticed, "Boomer" deaths have been on the rise from living too. Die in your bed, clutching your chest, or on the road, but you'll be a damned statistic either way.

Shot in bed by a jealous husband. The last words I want to hear are, "Get off my wife you SOB..... BOOM!!!!." (And it should be a youthful voice.)

Damm, you beat me to it.

two fastest growing groups of new riders, demographically, are women and boomers

do the math...................

So, . . .

A disproportionate number of (male) boomers are dying in bed with women, . . .

even though that percentage should be adjusted upward to account for motorcycle accidents cutting into those statistics?

This boomer death thing ain't new. They've been talking about it for a while. I tried to get good stats on it several times. Part of the problem with getting the stats is that each state does it differently. Most will give you age, sex, alcohol involvement, but few really describe cause in a manner that can be easily compared on a computer. Motorcycle model is almost non-existent in the stats. The stats are very hard to dispute when it comes to age. My sense of what was going on is that the young kill themselves off at the same high rate they always have. The guys in the middle go up and down in the stats without a whole lot of rhyme or reason (generally down over the last few years that data was available), us geezers are just getting wacked more each year. I really don't know how the author came to the conclusion that it was degrading reaction time. It may be a factor but there is no data to back that up. As long as there is no data to back up anything, I'll throw my theory out there. Older guys just have the money now they didn't have when they were young so they can afford a bike. The bike makes one seem macho. Just because you can afford one doesn't mean you know how to ride one. Once you reach a certain age and have accomplished, at least in your mind, lots of stuff, you believe you can figure out something as simple as riding a bike. Not a good conclusion. IMO, and in about 50 years of driving 2 and 4 wheels, the roads are more dangerous now that at any time in my driving experience. Put a geezer without adequate training on two wheels in a motorcycle unfriendly environment, viola you have dead geezers on the rise. Just my 2 cents worth.

One of my brothers (now age 59) is actually a worthy case study. A few years ago he decided it would be a good idea to get a motorcycle and start riding it for some commuting and occasional fun trips. Took an approved course, eventually got his license (after several failures of the driving test), and dabbled in a few different bikes. But he never really felt confident. He seems to be constantly dropping his bikes. Last week he informed me he's decided he'll sell his current bike and give up the idea altogether. He believes he's too old to develop the right instincts to be safe out there.

I applaud his decision. In fact, I'm relieved. I've already lost two brothers younger than I (to different misfortunes unrelated to motorcycling), and don't want to lose another. I'm the oldest - we're all boomers.

Rich, I was holding my breath and thank goodness it was a happy ending.

I'm so glad your brother turned out boring and alive. Make my day and tell me what bike he chose.
