Picked it up for $550, not too bad, only needed a rear tube to get it rolling. Had to run it up and down the street a few times to make sure the tranny worked... ;) and we've been tearing up the grass in our itty bitty yard. I figure I could replace some beat up parts and clean it up and maybe sell it for a little profit next year after he's ready for something bigger.

Anyone have any tips for tweaking this thing on the cheap? I don't want to put much $$ in it, but a few things need replaced, like the brake lever perch and brake shoes. God, drum brakes are weak! Maybe stiffer shock/fork springs?

Say, that sure looks like a set of FJR rotors back by the wall ;) Think they can be retrofitted to the XR?
Hmmm, I haven't seen any calipers for sale on the board...but then they wouldn't bolt up to the XR forks, so I'd have to get FJR forks....and then probably the triple clamps...and then...

Actually...no, I don't think it's gonna work! Too bad, it'd be a stoppie monster!

Lots of aftermarket parts avail much less than OEM new. On-line salvage yards too! Stiffer shock/fork? You planning on riding it more than the kid?

'The kid' is 21 and around 170 lbs....I just wanted to get him used to riding before he gets a street bike like he's been talking about.

Ummm, it is kinda fun to putt around on!
