Just a heads up, but they will not sell you a replacement tank ring. So if yours gets damaged or you have multiple bikes at the same model, you cannot buy the ring by itself. You have to purchase a brand new bag...

Bought a nice tank bag from Shad. I like it better than the GV. It has a better mount and and is easier to remove.

Problem is, they will not sell a tank ring independent. You must buy a whole new bag to get their stupid ring.

I chatted them up online, and it was confirmed that they simply will not provide a ring.

Here's a cut and paste.

In the meantime, I will not be buying any of their products anymore. And I'm in the market for a top case, bags, and even another tank bag. But I will not purchase when they support policies such as this.

Hello Don,

I hope all is well!

Regarding the question you asked us via chat, we checked with the warehouse department and they confirmed that the plastic part of the tank bag ring that you need comes only with the tank bags and is not sold separately.

We are attentive to any additional questions or comments.

Best regards.

I replied

Please provide contact information with somebody who has the ability to change this horrible policy.

I like your product, and think it is better than Givi and some of the other competitors as well.

But, however, you're really screwing the pooch by not providing additional rings for owners that have multiple bikes of the same brand and model.

There is no way I am going to buy a tank bag for each of my duplicate bikes just to get this stupid ring.

I see that GV does not have this ridiculous policy. And I have four of their tank bags. Yes, it's not eight, but it is four.. which is not a small amount of money.

I am sending this your way in sincere hopes you can rectify the situation.

Many folks are like me, they have more than one BMW GS, they have more than one Yamaha FJR, they have more than one Suzuki deal 650 or whatever.

If the policy does not change, this will be the last Shad product that I ever buy.

Please do not get defensive, I am trying to provide constructive information to you, as a customer, who really likes your product.

And here's the final reply from Shad....

Hello Don,

I hope all is well!

Thank you for your feedback and for sharing your thoughts about our products. We're glad to know you value their quality.

Regarding your concern about the availability of additional tank ring mounts, this policy is set by the company and the factory and, unfortunately, cannot be modified. However, your feedback has been noted and will be shared with the relevant teams for consideration in future decisions.

We appreciate your input and hope our products continue to meet your expectations despite this limitation. Please feel free to reach out if you have further questions or concerns.

Best regards.

To which I replied..
Fernando,

I am greatly disappointed to read your reply.

I think this is a marketing mistake, one that will greatly affect your sales.

I simply do not understand why a simple plastic part is not available as a standalone SKU.

What happens if a ring gets broken? Or the gas tank gets hit and the ring is deformed? Or, a rider has more than one of the same model bike?

Buy another high dollar tank bag?

Sadly, until you tell me differently, this will be the last product I buy from your company.

I’ll be sure to let others know on my own website, social media, and word-of-mouth.

I am sorry to say, but I guess I have to stick with your competitor, GV.

I am more than willing to speak, email, text, whatever to whom ever at your company to try and change this policy.

My guess, is that you contract these bags to a third-party, and that contract is for the bag and the mount?

In my case, I’ll simply fire up the plastic printer and make my own, for private consumption only.

Sorry it had to come down to this, I really like your product, I think it’s better than your competitors, except for this one Achilles tendon, a fatal flaw.

That stinks but you have to look at it from their angle... if you like their products so much you will buy multiple bags for multiple bikes. They are a business and looking to make more money.

And just some free advice, you may have gotten a different response if you were a bit less harsh. "Screwed the pooch", "horrible policy", "stupid ring" and "ridiculous policy" are not going to win you any favors. They might have done you a favor and given you one.

Check Shad in Spain. Or any of the european vendors. I bought all of my Shad gear from Motostorm in Italy at a substantial discount from what it could have been gotten for from a US vendor. Including freight.

Honey would not help here. I was very nice up front. It is what it is. A stupid policy. SW Motech sells independent rings, so does Givi. Guess whose product I'll buy?

SW Motech is different, but maybe not ideal. Sure, you can buy the tank rings separately. In fact, you HAVE to. I didn't realize this until I spent a small fortune on a waterproof bag "kit" for the FJR. THEN I had to order the ring, which I expected to be in the "kit". I contacted them and they offered it at a discount, but I'd already found one on eBay for a couple of buck less then their offer. So, buyer beware.

THEN one day I ... well let's just say that the mount on the bottom of the bag broke...just a little. (Might have been my fault for smashing it off with my upper body, but who's to say for sure?) I contacted SW Motech about buying a replacement bag mount. They said that it is only available with the bag as a kit.
I asked why it was not available and was told that sometimes people mount other (non-Motech) things to their tanks with them and then try to get the parts replaced under warranty, among other clever consumer nonsense.
Then I was told that mine was still under warranty and that they would be happy to send me a new kit as long as mine didn't break due to an accident. So I recalled the time I was at a gas station in the middle of nowhere and the darn thing wouldn't release, and how I got a bit anxious and had to smack it a bit before it finally came loose. (True story, but a little dry lube fixed that problem.) I went on to say that the little tab must have broken then and I didn't notice it right away.

They apologized for my troubles and they sent me a new kit. I returned my broken one as instructed, using their provided shipping label.

So, yeah. Pricey, but they stand behind their stuff. I really do like the bag and the mount. No idea why it got stuck that one time. It still latched on after I broke it off, but it was able to rock a bit, and I didn't feel all warm and fuzzy about that. But id DID still work.
