Brake caliber grease?

Several months ago I rebuilt the front brake calibers to my 04 as they were beginning to drag. Included with the new seals from Yamaha was several small packets of pink grease used for re-assembly (which I used of course). Does anyone know what type of grease this is? What grease can be substituted for this (should a caliber have to come apart for cleaning only) that is brake fluid compatable?

I thought the grease went on the back of the pad to keep it from squeeking. Clicky

I don't think it's grease. It's probably anti-squeal paste. It may seem grease-like, but sets up over time when it's put on the back of the pad to prevent it from moving and dampen high-frequency oscillation (aka "squeal"). Some brakes squeak without it...some don't.

OK -- I've read it one too many times now and whether the slippery goo is grease or not, . . .

it's JUST NOT RIGHT to refer to these brake components as "calibers"!!!! It's "CALIPER" fercrissakes!!!

"Caliber" typically refers to the diameter of the bore of a firearm, or the diameter of a circular section of something, or even to the quality, capacity or ability of something or someone. [/Rant]

FYI, what I found after doing some research:

Permatex 24115 Ultra Disk Brake Caliper Lube Silicone Formula, 8 oz,

Product Features

Fortified with moly for superior performance in high pressure conditions, this product provides continuous lubrication and has no dropping point

Temperature range -65F to 550F intermittent

Maintains a grease-like consistency and will not liquefy, even at extreme temperatures

Suggested Applications: Disc brake caliper pins, slides, bushings, PISTONS and rubber sleeves

My mistake, calipers...

 
From a Permatex technical data sheet (on line):

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

• Long and short bolts

• Sleeves

• Bushings

• Outboard pad backing plate

• Inboard pad backing plate

• Disc brake calipers

• Caliper pins

• Pistons

Ok.

Caliper disassembly, for overhaul/piston/seal replacement--clean brake fluid

For front caliper lubrication--nothing, there are no components on front calipers requiring lubrication

For rear caliper lubrication of retaining bolts--The aforementioned Permatex lube, or what I use, SilGlyde.

The small pink packets of grease came with the front seal kits in the same package (from Yamaha). I did not rebuild the rear caliper as it was fine...
