How many miles are people getting out of their brake pads? I know it varies by weight and riding style, but some quick numbers would be great.

I have 30K on mine and still going strong....

Thanks for the reply. I have a little over 18,000 miles and havent really checked and got a bit worried that I waited too long. I will check them but it doesnt sound too urgent. Thanks again.

This thread's already in NEPRT, but ..... You can't judge how your brake pads are wearing from the life someone else gets out of theirs. If yours have never been checked, you should take a look before your next ride.

I've seen guys wear rear brake pads out in 5,000 miles by riding their rear pedal or almost exclusivelyl using their rear brake. I've seen other guys who ran their rear brake pads for 30,000 or more miles because they tended to not use the rear brake and kept the free play properly adjusted and the pivot point properly lubed.

Front brake is all over the lot too. That guy who gets 5000 out of the rear may get an infinite amount out of the front because he's not using it.

Somebody ought to be looking at your brakes (you, or whomever does your 4000 increment services) every 4000 miles.

Thanks for the feed back. I'll check them.

Gen-II specs thus far...

45,000 on OEM.

30,000 on EBC HH sintered (tracking thus far).

OEM costs 3x EBC. You get the financial picture.

As you can tell, I'm anal about stats.

:)

The OE front pads on my '04 wear unevenly. The inside pad on each caliper wears faster than the outside pad. So I swapped them. Moved inside right to outside left, etc.

I did this at 29K miles. Now at 41K miles the wear is approximately even again for all four pads. So the pad lifespan has been significantly increased.

I rarely use the rear brake with any intensity so the OE rear pads show little wear.

Whilst in West Virginia for EOM, I wound up have the front and rear brakes replaced thanks to Freedom Motorsports. (Shameless plug for the crew at Freedom: rear tire, front and rear brakes, in and out in about 45 minutes, less than $200!)

This was at right around 53K miles.

My rear brakes were gone. Luckily I don't use the rears. I'm the third owner and am guessing that they were the originals.

Fronts were down to < 100 miles of life. I'm guessing the pads which were replaced were the second set.

So, ~ 50K for the rear (depending on how you ride, of course), and somewhere around 25K for the fronts (again, depending on how you ride).

Damn. Why didn't I think of that? Mine are wearing the same way.

Oh well, those pads I bought from Keithaba will still work in 2 more years after the "rotated" pads wear out.

Thanks!!

All of 'em. I tend to use "engine braking", combined with the desert like flatness, straight a-ways 'round here.

I'll post up in a few years an let ya know. ;)

:jester:

Front OEM pads at 25K, 10K on aftermarket fronts, 25K on next OEM front set. Rear OEM replaced @ 60K.

250# rider - occasionally a tad aggressive in the twisties

My Damn sponsor of Brake Pad Abusers Anonymous is forcing me to comment....26K OEM...10K per EBC HH on front....there's a back brake on this thing? My bike is my car....my car is quick...stoopit..but quick....I brake harder to keep sperm motility factors in check...I've sired too many genetically short-changed progeny already...no need to push it....I surrender to the higher power of the friction gods...the FJR WILL stoppie dammit!....your lack of mileage may vary....where's my beer....

Blessings,

Bobby

28k and the new pads are ready but the old pads are still going. The spec for the pad thickness limit is .5mm. I won't let them get that far but they wear so slowly I have no idea when they'll be ready.
