Hey there!

Yup, just got my 05 FJR 1300/a one week and 45 minutes ago, and I absolutely love it! Its more than I expected, in many ways.

I've spent the last week breaking it in, riding everywhere and anywhere I can. As of this moment I have just under 500 miles on. Its taken me some time to get used to it. Some things I've noticed that cause me a little bit of concern are as follows:

1. The shifting is a little bit "clanky", is this normal? I've adjusted the turn dial on the shifter handle to all 5 of the positions, and the results are a bit different than what I expected. My understanding was that the dial simply changed the position of the handle for people with different length fingers, more like a comfort thing. But in fact, it has changed the distance of the friction zone, in several cases, drastically. I put it on 5, and it wanted to launch like a drag bike. 1 has a really long distance to hit the zone. Regardless of where I put it, I still get some pretty hard and noisy transmission shifts. The owner's manual only says to put it where its supposed to be, or something to that extent. Next...

2. I've read alot of articles about the proper way to break in a FJR, or any motor, for that matter. I've read a few that talk about overheating issues, etc. People have said over and over to do the Moto Man break in, change the oil at 25 miles, and then ride it normal for the rest of the 1000 mile break in period, IAW the owners manual. I've also read, "Don't do any freeway during the break-in period." I didn't read anything about that in the owner's manual. There is so much contradictory information out there. Here's what I know about my bike. I've done the Moto Man break in, in a slightly modified way, and attempted to stay off the freeway as much as possible, but in town riding in San Diego is just ridiculous. Stop light after stop light, and I seem to hit every stinking one of them. The bike gets hot, hot enough to turn on the fan several times, to and from work. The highest it has gotten was 4 bars on the temp gauge. I do a couple variations on my trips to and from work, a few miles on backstreets, hop on the freeway for about 3 to 4 miles, cool the bike down, and then back on the back streets into work. I have no heat issues on the freeway.

So far, this is the extent of my concerns, but I am looking for some valid, straight scoop from some FJR owners who have worked through this stuff. I would absolutely appreciate any and all insight in to this break-in. Thanks....

1) Yup. Shifter is a bit clanky/clunky. Normal. It will smooth out a bit but not much.

2) Follow the break-in procedure outlined in the OM. Other than that, I would add to change the oil & filter before 100 miles, but you're beyond that recommendation.

Enjoy & Welcome!

Thanks twowheel,

Yeah, I'm past 100 miles, but I did change it at 300 miles, at the recommendation of one of the guys at Fun Bike Center. I get the 600 mile service done on the 23rd, so we'll see how it goes after that.

The shifter part from an 01 R1 will cut the shifting motion on the FJR in half. You are tralking about the clutch lever adjustment. Total disengagement is enough ?? The throttle body sync fjrtech.com is a good thing to do to run even. SD is a hot area so no help here. TJ

Hey TJ,

I'm not sure I understand your reply......the shifter part from an 01 R1 part. Are you suggesting that I should change the shift lever to help correct the "clunking" sound from the transmission?

As far as the throttle sync, that is going to happen real soon. I don't have any idea really on how to do it, other than what I have read here, so I am taking it to the dealer. They said they will do the whole 600 mile service for $130. Granted, there isn't much to do on this first check up, but they know the bike better than I do, so I am trusting them to help me keep it in top condition. I am going to keep an eye on the heat situation. Anyone have any suggestions on what I can do to keep her cool in town?

With respect to riding on the Freeway during breakin, I don't see a problem with that. The idea is to not run the engine at a fixed RPM for a sustained period until the engine is broken in. Heat is the worse enemy of a new engine as it causes parts to grow and tolerances are tight on a new engine. You want the parts to get friendly with eachother at a slow pace.

Hmmm, kind of reminds me of something from my teenage years, wish I could remember what it was  .
