OK, so I'm picking up my Shiny new 06 today. I need to put 600 or so gentle miles on her/it, (yet to be named). By next week so I can ride it to the BMOA rally in Vermont ;)

I'll also need to do the proverbial Oil change at 500-600 miles. What else?

Throttle body sync?

Are there instructions for that online? Don't know if I'll get a manual by then. How difficult is that. Does it void my warranty if I do it myself? (that would be bad). It shouldn't but does anyone know for sure?

Let me know what else I should do. Planning a 3k plus mile trip for the following week.

"Snap".....big debate coming on this one. There are about eight can-o-worms you just opened up. Hope you're hungry. ****'s gonna get really deep today....I can smell it. lol

Breaker, breaker....make that 11. "But this one goes to eleven".

Congratulations on your choice of bike!

I would drain and replace the gear oil in the pumpkin as well.

Throttle body sync?
Yes.

One of many threads on this is here:

https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php?s...ic=7404&hl=

It should take you less than an hour. You'll need a manometer. Most use the MotionPro Economy Carb Tuner available from multiple on-line sources. You'll also need a small collection of hex keys and a phillips head screw driver. A long, small-headed flat blade screw driver will be required to adjust the intakes. A block of wood or section of broom stick about 12 or 15 inches long would allow you to prop the tank rather than removing it, assuming there is enough gas in it for gas to flow at a high angle.

Does it void my warranty if I do it myself? (that would be bad). It shouldn't but does anyone know for sure?
It's against the law in the states for a manufacturer to void the warranty merely as a result of an owner electing to have non-manufacturer work done on the bike. That said, if the manufacturer can show that the person doing the work was incompetent, and their "work" is what damaged the bike, that can void your warranty coverage for the specific damage done.

Let me know what else I should do. Planning a 3k plus mile trip for the following week.
Okay. You're going to have to take over answering your questions from here out. There are myriad good suggestions on this forum for how to improve the comfort and performance of the bike. All you gotta do is read.

Oh. Right. I forgot to mention, Renegade, you should read this:

https://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

so that you can be stranded by indecision in the dealer parking lot with your bike running. What to do? What to do?

Dang...we have a good one tonight. "The teachings of don juan" by Carlos Castaneda.

You had better stop being gentle on the miles. Put some pressure on those cylinder wall and engine parts. It ain't broke in until you do so.

Actually, what is required for the 600 mile check/service will be listed in the "periodic maintenance" section of your owners manual:

check TBS, idle speed

check operation and fluid: clutch, front and rear brakes

check steering bearing for looseness, repack(?)

check sidestand switch

change engine oil and filter

change final gear oil

lube throttle cables

Break-in with "gentle miles"? I put "normal" miles on mine, just no long freeway droning. Lots of stop and go, varied engine speeds and as many twisty roads as possible so I was up shifting and down shifting. Good luck and enjoy your bike.

Welcome mike!

Just made the switch myself. You planning on keeping your BMOA membership? I like the magazines, but can't see the reason to keep paying $70 when i don't have a bmw anymore.

It's actually "Matt" :)

Responding to a bunch of people in this one reply

My dad has the beemer, not me, though there are a few I'd like to have, I can't seem to part with the dough.

By Gentle miles, what I meant was; I wasn't going to ring it's neck just yet, and I was avoiding long highway jaunts. The Stealer was about 14 miles, so I took backroads and as many twisties as I could find. I kept the RPMs a changing as much as I could and as varied as I could with a few medium runs a relatively low 40-60 cruising, but never for more than 10 minutes or so.

Maybe I'm being to anal.

The "Stealer" was pretty adamat about me having my "First" scheduled maintenance done at a dealer and in the puter, they didn't really care if it was with them. Said it really helps down the road, especialy since I added 3 more years of warranty. But I'm debating that.

I'm fairly mechanically inclinced. Already have the required tools to sync the throttle bodies, just need the instructions and know what knobs to turn ;)

Changing oil, is well, changing oil. I can read labels and put the right stuff in. Paying them for a 2 hour service job plus part doesn't sit well with me. They also aren't going to sync the throttle boddies.

Later tonight, I'll post my opinion of my first ride on the 06 vs my 98 Sport-toured' ZX-11. There are things I miss already, but things I'll be a fixin.

So far I LOVE it though. Very nice ride. Didn't take me too long to scrape the pegs, and I was a little shocked at that. I thought the 11 didn't turn well :D But I'll make due, just need to move my fat arse off the seat.

Much fun is coming my way.

As long as you keep a diary of the services performed you should be fine. You know the dealer isn't going to check the TBS if the engine sounds smooth.

Go to this place for good write ups on service procedures. I don't think anything is posted for '06s, but the basics are the basics.

Nah, I don't need to debate those things. I'll use my own oil choice and break it in how I'm gonna break it in.

But having not owned a recent model FJR, nor having ever had a _new_ bike before, I am looking to those that know for 'zactly' what I need to do at the 600 mile service.

And if anyone has a Service manual for an 06 (or linky for where to buy one cheap or electronically that would be best).

[Even the stealer I bought it from said, "Oh, no you don't have to sync the throttle bodies", but clearly the Owners manual says to check that.

Pffft.

You'd have to do a search for the Owners Manual, but I don't think the '06 is available yet.

I'll bet most dealers just "feel" for vibration and call the TBS good.

Anything you need to do will be listed on the site I gave a link to. There's a lot of good information anthere as most of the write-ups include pictures, tool lists and torque values, etc. The only thing different might be how the tank is raised, but the basics will be there, including the "weird" fasteners holding the body together.

Speaking of the 600 mile service... while I was at my dealership this morning, a guy who bought an FJR just a few weeks after me came in for a service. While talking to him, I mentioned the fact I was getting ready to put on my third set of tires. He's amazed that I'm going through tires so quickly and I notice he has new skins on his bike. I ask him how many miles he got out of his last tires on the FJR and he gives me a funny look. After a little more talking I realize he's there to get his 600 mile service done and the new skins are actually the stock tires! He bought his bike over a year ago and he's just now getting the 600 mile service done? What a waste of a great bike!

Maybe he's hoping for a higher resale value... did you ask him if it had ever been in the rain? I hear that's a big plus in motorcycle ads...

that's good, just like all used dirtbikes have 'new top ends' :)

There are some for sale on ebay, but i'm holding out for an electronic one.
I'd order one from Yamaha Clicky

The one's on e-bay are boot-legged. What you save on the 600 mile break-in service will buy several manuals.

Edit: I changed final drive oil at 300 miles, it was very very dirty!
