--Changed oil (Yamalube) at 600 miles.

--Changed oil (Yamalube) at 3110 miles. [The oil had gotten quite a bit darker.] Intend to change oil every 3,000 miles.

--Service department at local Yamaha dealer discouraged use of synthetic oil, however, when pressed, said to use regular oil until at least 8,000 miles.

Question #1: Is the advice that I received from my local dealer's service department correct, based on your personal experience with the FRJ?

Question #2: Did you find it beneficial to switch to synthetic oil for use in your FJR?

Questioon #3: Which synthetic oil do you use in your FJR?

Thanks in advance for your responses, which to date I've found very useful on other subjects and I apologize in advance if all of these questions are addressed in the never ending threads section, however my search didn't find answers to each of these questions.

Specifically

What is "break in oil"?

and

Oil and Fuel for FJR;, What Type?

Maybe even

BREAK IN, break in how to

The answers are probably in there somewhere.

In short though I would... Run Yamilube oil for first 5-10 K Miles to keep the dealer happy. Then chose your personal favorite oil and stick to it. Change it regularly and change the filter at the same time. Dont forget a new washer on the drain plug every time also. Don't use any oil that says "energy conserving" or "low friction" on the package. These have friction reducers which dont work well with a wet clutch.

And NO I am not going to mention any specific brand of oil here. You can pick your own oil like you pick your own religon. :p

Enjoy...

Toe nailed it as far as I am concerned. Synthetic not necessary. Use any high quality conventional motor oil of the proper viscosity making sure it's not energy conserving, change according to manufacturer's specs (4000 miles), and you and your FJR will have many happy miles together.

Read the first link Toecutter provided. Highly enlightening info that be.

And now.........moving this thread to it's proper home........

There's no way to bring this subject up without re-hashing :) .

Still, I read some of that link to that other board and look, some very familiar sounding forum names  .

Oh, yeah, and I wouldn't want to be squid bait.
