I just finished a BBG ride and do not have any other rides with the IBA done. In order to vet the BBG certification do I have to submit this as a ss1000 first? If so I'm hoping I can use the same ride documentation to get the BBG award but the website was vague on that part. Thanks, and my ass hurts

I thought it was pretty clear. In the BBG rules it says:

WARNING: Before you can apply for Bun Burner Gold certification (1,500+ miles in 24 hours), you must have at least completed one of the following; a SaddleSore 1000, a Bun Burner 1500 (1,500 miles in 36 hours), a SaddleSore 2000 (or other similiar IBA ride), the Alberta 2000, Minnesota 1000, TimberButt, Tarbutt Rally, Utah 1088, any Cognoscente Group event, any MERA event, or the Iron Butt Rally.
Have you done a SaddleSore or one of the other listed rides before this one? If not, I would suggest presenting a compelling case to IBA staff why you skipped the step. They might still certify, but they might just approve as a regular BunBurner.

In another section it said you could do a ss1000 and a bun burner in the same ride. Does that not apply to bbg also?

No. A Bun Burner is 1500 miles in 36 hours...an extension of a Saddle Sore. It's a different critter than a Burn Burner GOLD. That's probably why they listed a BBG as an Xtreme! ride in bolded red with an exclamation point and different rules. ;)

That's also probably why they include another item in each of the ride instructions:

If you have any questions about this ride, you may write to the Iron Butt Association at P.O. Box 9450, Naperville, IL 60567-9450 or send e-mail to [email protected].
It's still possible they may certify, but I would suggest you contact staff on their forum here. Ira's a great resource for these kinds of dilemmas.

Ok, I don't mind jumping through some hoops but I would really like to get credit for the ride I actually did. We'll see what they say... Thanks.

..and the key is you KNOW you did it - and can do it again tomorrow if needed.

Congrats on your ride!

congrats on the ride, report?

.

As Ignacio posted, it is as it reads, I am pretty sure they did that so guys would not just strike for gold at a first attempt, and do something smaller to get a true feel. However, with appropriate documentation, they may secretly, quietly certify it. Good Luck.

You must go back and do it over. J/K

I've learned the hard way in the LD world reading comprehension counts for a lot. Don't assume anything.

You know what you did but may have to settle for less than a BBG

So go ride a SS1K this weekend, turn that paperwork in and wait say, a couple of months, then turn in the BBG paperwork.

While the dates of the rides may not be in sequence, the dates they were documented will be. Lots of riders out there with paperwork for rides that are just sitting in a drawer. Sometimes certs are awarded years after the ride is actually done just because the rider didn't send the paperwork in until finding it later.

edit - Rememer, our job is to make it easy for them to verify. The easier it is, the clearer your documentation is, the faster the turn around time is.

I know two people that did a BBG without doing a SS1000 and they both got certified. They had done several 1000 mile days before but never documented them. They did contact IBR before they did the BBG to see if they would certify them. Don't know if that will make a difference.

Like others have said, contact the IBA and ask. I am pretty sure the reason for the prerequisite rides is to make sure some people don't tackle more than they are able to do safely. To do extreme rides it is really helpful to know one's body and its needs for hydration, rest, nutrition etc. This comes more with experience, and the IBA is really more about safety than a lot of people think. Congrats on your ride, but were you aware of the requirements ahead of the ride or not? I am not a big fan of people doing one ride and then getting certified for 2 or 3 certificates even though it is not against the rules i.e. doing a 1500 BB or BBG and getting a ss1000 also with that ride (just me so no big deal). I hope you get certified for the BBG, but I hope the IBA makes this an exception and not the typical situation since there is a valid reason for their requirements.

They'll certify you. They don't like folks doing extreme rides for the first ride as they don't want folks biting off more than they can chew and hurting themselves.

But if you did the ride and properly documented it, you'll get the cert.

BTW, congrats on completing the ride! I'll never forget my first BBG. You do realize however, you have now opened Pandora's Box?

Thanks guys, I posted the same question on the iron butt forum and Ira said it will probably get certified but there's still a chance it won't. So I'm just gonna send it in and hope for the best.

I did read the rules but somehow missed the big warning paragraph until the day before the ride. By then it was too late to change anything so I said f@#k it lets ride :thumbsupsmileyanim:

I'm not so sure about opening pandoras box though. I enjoyed a good ride with a friend and do have a sense of accomplishment, but even while on this ride I wanted to jump off the interstate and hit some good curvy roads and see the sites. We road through 7 states and I didn't see much of anything. And the stock seat sucks donkey balls, so I'll need a new one if I'm ever gonna do anything similar again ;)

I'll post up a ride synopsis later, I don't have enough to make a full blown ride report. It was basically 23hrs and 37min of go go go go go!!!

After first attempting, and then completing a ss1000, I find this to be an understatement!

I'm looking at a 50cc. My Dad is in the Tampa Bay area, and my daughter is in Baton Rouge, so I could catch up on some visiting on the way back!

Congrats on the big ride, as well!!!

Got it! :yahoo:

I dunno yet, I was reading about the rallies they put together and they sound like fun. I'm in line for the Russell group buy so I'll be more likely to get out for longer rides when I have a better seat I think...

Congrats on the accomplishment!

This will be the first summer in the last 7 that I have not completed a BBG. Hmmm.....I might have to plan one just to get a 2010 IBA cert.

Again, well done and welcome to the addiction!
