I have a 2012 with approx 2200 miles. When I ride it I can smell a burning smell, doesn't smell mechanical more like burning leaves. Oil level is good, coolant good, I check to see if the disk are hot, nothing. I can not pin point where it is coming from. Any ideas or has anyone had similiar experience?

If you let it sit for extended periods I'd have to say it's the dust burning off...I get that once in awhile.

Airforce,

Welcome to the forum. Not sure if we can help with this one, but...

Next time ya smell this, put cher nose down by da bottom of the fairing under da radiator. That's where the headers pick up zee dust and road debri. Anything that hits them or the catalytic converter is gonna burn. Could be just the same old thing we all smell occasionally from anything that lands on the exhaust system down there. Burning leaves, you say? That may be exactly what got up in there. Leaves smushed in the road can turn into dried out little flakes. Being so light weight, they are easily flung up into places they don't belong.

Had a good friend whose car caught fire when his wife parked it in a pile of leaves on the street. The cat. conv. caught them on fire and the car was destroyed. So you're wise in being concerned about a smell like this. However, it seems more likely to me that you've just got a few little flakes of ?? that got wedged too close to the exhaust system. I suppose wind can blow stuff in there while the bike's parked as well.

Just a few thoughts. Hope it helps.

+1 on cooking debris and insect critters. I would add that a car's radiator area smells very similar after running also; however, we rarely notice since we're sitting a few feet back.

I'd say as long as you don't have a very strong smell of fuel, you're probably ok. Post-trip inspections are always good though. ;)

It was commonly reported when the "first wave" of FJRs hit our shores back in late 2002. It's normal. Perhaps corrosion inhibitors burning off that were sprayed on the bike before shipping.

Man after 2200 miles I would think any corrosion or rust inhibitors would long be gone!

Burning leaves smell also has me wondering? ..my son did say this to me once however when I had a party one nite "hey dad, it smells like burning leaves in the garage now that Tom n Joey went out there!".

Seriously, you might want to take it back to the dealer (since it's under warranty anyway). You never know, something could be a rye like a hose or cable coming into contact with something it's not supposed to.

Let us know....

Thanks for all the input. I am going to stop by the dealership tonight to at least get it documented. Plus take a good look under the cowling to see if anything catches my eye. Might even wash it and see (smell) what happens. Once again thanks.

Come to think of it, my bike has generated an odd smell from time to time. However, it's never smelled like burning leaves. Who knows, maybe what you smell IS... burning leaves.

just the other day my 04 did the burning leaf thing again.. it's been a long time since it did that, but it used to regularly. have never figured out what it is but 60k miles later the bike is still solid

It's that time of the year when people are burning leaves. Are you sure it's your bike? I was riding this evening and smelled burning leaves or brush in a number of areas.

On my 2007 I had a simular problem and it turned out to be some insulating foam under the faring touching the hot exhaust

My '07 with 61k+ miles still has that smell once in a while, primarily after riding wet roads. I've always figured it's crap on the pipes, water evaporating from foam or whatever. Never have pinpointed it and long ago quit worrying about it.

I've had it a few times lately on my 2010 as well - not spending a lot of time worrying about it as everything seems to check out.

Ya know, I have a 2011 and I've had that same leaf/ wood burning smell multiple times as well. I never have found where its coming from but so far doesn't seem to be the result of something being all jacked up??

Same here DITTO!

More of a Rubber smell to me. I have actually seen puffs of smoke back in the earlier days down near the shock area. Increased smell on the wetter days also. I hope whatever it is burns up before my YES runs out. I have yet to have my ground spider recall done yet.

Someday maybe.
