Barry,Live your life the way you'd like. If you want to smoke...than smoke. Enjoy every day. And when your time is up...at least you had fun.

Take care buddy.
Stop it Joe, I want my friend Bust to live a long time; if Barry croaks then I have to start picking on RadioHowie, which is like bullying kids riding on the short bus! JSNS!

Joe makes a good point about doing what makes you happy. I believe that happiness is the most important thing affecting quality of life, stress, and overall health. However, make sure that smoking is actually something that makes you happy and not just a habit that you satisfy without enjoying because it does take a big toll on your body.
I guess we all have to decide what it would take for us to enjoy every day. Being healthy enough to enjoy those days is a big piece of the puzzle for me. I don't go overboard, but I know the day will come too soon that I'll have to give up some of the pleasures I enjoy now. I've seen some of my dearest friends have to give up motorcycling, and if some changes to the way I live now can help forestall that day, I'll make some sacrifices now.

I would hope for nothing less for Barry...or for that matter, any other member of this forum.

The subject of this thread hits me like a freight train in the night.

My paternal grandfather died of his 2nd heart attack at aged 50. At age 59, my father went for a stress test so he could join a health club and the next day he had quad-bypass surgery.

I make 49 next month. The old people say I have their looks, stature, and attitude.

So I made a decision a while back to hedge my bets. I eat pretty decent during the week, work out 2-3 times per week, and try to stress out less (the latter being by far the most challenging for me).

However and OTOH, most every weekend I eat something fried and enjoy a few adult beverages. When I'm camping, I'll puff on my pipe in the evening by the fire.

And I ride a motorcycle. A lot. Every friggin chance I get.

The cardiologist told me that the secret to good health is extremely simple - 1/3 Diet, 1/3 Lifestyle, and 1/3 Genetics.

Something has been happening to me over the past 3-4 years. I'm learning that we have a finite amount of energy. We have to choose how to expend that energy wisely. Because to a certain extent, when it's gone... it's gone.

I totally agree with Mr. Pants, and pretty much everyone else's comments on the subject. I can add one thing, using Yogi Berra-type mathematics........

It's 1/3 diet, 1/3 Lifestyle, 1/3 Genetics, and 1/3 Luck.

Phuck it. Pizza, whiskey, wimmens.

My ticker is perfect. It's my liver that's shot.

Get active. Find a mountain bike (bicycle) and a trail to ride. It has changed my life....

Have to disagree with this advice although I recognize it is offered with good intent. My perspective is that you should do what ever you can to extend a life with the quality you desire. Live long enough for your grand kids to remember you well and die in a bike wreck while being chased by a jealous husband. Smoking does not play a role in any of that. I know, enough with the sanctimony and hypocrisy from me. Live long and well, BN.

I guess everyone is different. 1 in 5 non-medicated stents fail. 1 in 20 medicated stents fail (plavix)

A friend of mine got three (medicated) stents. He was smarter than the doctor and didn't take his meds. A month later it almost killed him. Yes, he takes his meds now.

My Grandfather (Mother's side) had a heart attack 50 yrs old in 1940. Doctor put him on a diet and one ounce of whiskey in a tall glass of hot water 1/2 hour before lunch and again 1/2 hour before dinner.

He smoked a pipe and cigars. When the cigars got short, he'd put them in the pipe and smoke them down to nuthin'.

He smoked until put him in the nursing home at age 96..... and even then, I would go there and sneak him a cigar... He missed his 104th birthday by three days.

My Brother-in-law was a three-pack-a-day smoker and probably a 12-pack of beer every day. He had a heart attack at age 45 and got two stents in 2001 and then gave up smoking.... but still drinks a lot of beer. He appears to be doing OK.

Worked out every day, roller bladed or biked 10 miles every day, had a massive heart at 43, had the privilege of getting 5 stents. I have had zero problems with it at all. They told me mine was caused purely by genetics so I stopped working out and exercising"

I'm hardly qualified to speak here, with one lousy stent less than a year old and no surgeries. I was approaching 57 when it happened.

Cholesterol good, BP good, blood sugar good, weight a tiny bit high (but 45 pound less high than 18 months ago!)

Lotsa damn pills now, though.

Original question, it seems a stent has no problem going 9 months........ Does that help????

If you die on me Barry, I'm gonna beat your ***!!

Take care of your ticker dude. IF you wanna quit smokinzg, try the e-cig route. All the people I know that have fully quit for 4+ years quit using those after multiple failures. If you dont wanna quit, well, don't. Just remember, I have a big stick and I'm gonna use you for a Piñata.

As I packed for my first motorcycle tour quite a few years ago, my wife was noticeably nervous. As I gave my kisses goodbye, I distinctly remember her proclaiming....

"Listen here - if you go up in them mountains and die, when you get home, I'm going to kill you!!!"

Consider giving Chantix a try. A pill that lessens your desire for tabacco. I used it to quit Skoal after over 30 years and it made it a fairly simple event. Can cause super vivid dreams. Some are real good dreams... real good. Some have nightmares, but I never did. Worth a shot.

By the way, we've never met. I think you've told me a to go *** myself a few times and I consider that low number to be a glowing endorsement. I'd like the opportunity to meet you someday; maybe a stopover here at the MT Outpost on your way to OR. I want to see if you are as big of an a$$hat as everyone else seems to think you are.
