Today in Palmdale, California "The Singing Road" was voted on to be silenced!

Yep, Ave. K in Palmdale, CA. used to be a drawing card to travellers, but it will become like all other roads as soon as the City sends out it's crew to re-pave it.

Apparently, Ave. K had harmonic grooves pre-programmed into its original casting (concrete tarmac), and if a motorist reached 55 mph while rolling over it, the road would play for you the William Tell Overture.

But No More?

Well, I guess here's another attempt to subdue creativity!

Blows, doesn't it?

Not to be picky but the road was west of Lancaster between 60th West and 70th West. It was a kick to drive on and seeing the smiles on peoples faces. It was designed for a Honda Civic commerial. Drive over the road heading west played the the song as designed. However, if one drove it backwards or heading east it sounded like it was say "Paul is dead, Paul is dead,...." It is too bad that a couple of complaints killed it.

...and the pussification of America happily trudges on.
From what I read about it, it's EXTREMELY annoying to the local residents, because it actually sounds horrible and you hear it EVERY SINGLE TIME a car goes by, including at 4am, and it was far more than just a couple of complaints. 40 or 50 people (most of the neighborhood) complained repeatedly. It was a stupid idea to start with, if you ask me.

Now if they can do something about the damn brick streets in downtown Orlando, I'll be very happy. Those things are death traps for motorcycles with invisible basketball size potholes all over the place.

I never heard of the road until I read this post. Looked it up on You Tube and found this video.

I don't see any houses near the road.

Living in the area where the road was place the nearest house were about 400 yards away. However, there is not any natural barriers such as trees in the high desert to defuse the sound. Homes that are two stories high the upstairs windows might be open to let the cool air in. Unfortunely the complainers did not attend public hearing to discuss the event and only complained afterword.

Huh, been here 3 years and first ever hearing about this. Then again, don't go that way for anything.

As stated, BUZZ KILLS.
