Today was the first nice day in months, so I took Big Blue out for a spin. I have been dying to get out ever since I fitted my new California Scientific tall screen so I could try it out.

If you don't know which screen this is:

Since there aren't much impressions about this screen I was a little worried, but given that our police chose this screen for their new FJR's and knowing how rigerously (sp) they test new bikes, I figured I'd be safe by ordering this screen at the same height as they do.

Boy, am I glad I did! I ordered the tall version, which is about +4.5"/+2" from stock. It looks huge, and at first I thought it would be too tall for me, even though I am 6'2" (36" inseam). Well, after riding it today, it is not too tall. In the low position I can look well over it. In the high position, I look through the screen.

So how does it do? In one word, excellent! In the low position there is a slight turbulance to be heard around the helmet. Press the button to move it up slightly, and all of a sudden total silence! No more wind noise, no turbulance, nothing. Online sound is the engine. And, because of the big holes in the bottom of the screen, there is also zero pushing in the back.

This truly is an excellent screen and well worth the dough. It makes an already excellent bike even better and lots quieter. Anyone in the market for a screen to lower turbulance and backpressure should imo seriously consider this screen.

Me, I couldn't be happier!

Any linky to site for screen? How much was it? Any need to modify/move anything to get it mounted? In the lowest position can you still feel wind on your body or does it all hit your head? Do you feel a lot of air through the holes in front (ie would you get blasted by cold air in the winter / drenched with rain in the summer throught the holes?)

Thank you

Gary

Their site is here. Price is $185.

I was riding today in 50F weather, in my Savanna II jacket and no liner. Basically my summer outfit, and I could not feel any cold on my chest. I didn't hold my hand in front of the holes, but I couldn't feel any air on my body while riding.

In the lowest position, wind just hits my helmet so there is no wind directly hitting my torso.

And, because of the big holes in the bottom of the screen, there is also zero pushing in the back.
I am very interested in this screen for this very reason. I am a little shorter than you at 6' even. I want the best of both worlds: lots of wind at me when the screen is down and full coverage when up. Since I live in South Florida, I need the wind when its hot, but a little more protection when it rains or is cooler. The problem is, like everyone else, putting the stock screen all the way up causes that annoying backpressure.

Interesting that the '06 has vents below the instruments to relieve the backpressure. I assume these perform essentially the same way? Can you tell me a little more about the backpressure reduction? Is it really gone completely? TIA!

Yup, it's gone. No more windy hand pushing me to the dash for me. :)

You could experiment with their different sizes; they will swap out for a different size at no charge. For me not really an option cause I'm in Europe, but I am happy with the tall screen.

How it will be in the heat of summer, I have no idea. I guess I will find out in a few months. But given that I have a cool summer jacket, I think I will be fine.

I also just purchased this same Cal Sci Tall screen and have a different opinion.

The weather is rotten here in Maryland this time of year: Cold, snow & salty roads. So I was excited to get a 40 degree, albeit very windy, day for an initial test ride of 120 miles. I hadn't ridden in over 8 weeks. I installed the shield along with a dash shelf (for future mounting of GPS, V-1 and XM). The new shelf resides right behind the shield openings.

I'm 6 foot even with a 30 inch inseam. I was previously using a Yamaha +2 screen. I was basically okay with the Yamaha +2 except for the back pressure issues. More coverage would have been better, but in the fully raised position the Yam +2 had too much back pressure for my liking.

With the C.S. Tall, I found there was excellent wind coverage in the lower position but the back pressure was just as bad as the Yamaha +2. In the fully raised position, there was significant back pressure, much more that I had ever experienced with the Yamaha shield. I felt wind noise was higher regardless of position. My ride was mostly 2-lane back roads at 50-65 MPH. 20 miles of the ride was on the Interstate at 75 - 85 MPH.

The next experiment will be testing the two shields back to back, with and without the shelf. Having not ridden in a while may have skewed my perception. But Cal Sci was great on the phone: They said to simply send it back for an exchange.

The weather is still rotten, so it will be a while before I re-test. But my initial impression is that the Cal Sci Tall is not the right shield for me.

Anybody ridden in heavy rain with this shield, I was wondering if the vents at the bottom allow a lot water into the cockpit area?

I've been using a Cee Bailey +4+3 for some time now. I've been somewhat lazy and put up with its shortcomings till now. I get a fair amount of buffeting from it....better than stock, but still too much for me. But I get way too much back pressure when I really raise it to the top while seeking some still air. I'm going to install my new CalSci tall shield tomorrow. I'll chime in then and give my impressions as to the plusses and minusses it may offer.

Hi all,

I have a Cee Bailey +4+2 with the "flip" and have raked it back using about 1/2" of spacers under the yoke of the screen. That works like a rifle tuning block. With this configuration I don't feel any back pressure even with the screen all the way up (which I only do in the coldest weather).

That said, at 6'4" the +4+2 still puts plenty of wind on my helmet which is noisy, even with etymotic er-6 earplugs and music. That's why I've been considering the CalSci tall windscreen.

...been using the cee baily monsterflow eurocut, was very good at keeping the wind off my shoulders and was perfect at lowest setting (for a breeze on the helmet and body protection) but at the high setting, it is perfectly still,but it feels like a bloody spinaker, and gives lots of backpressure. I have the calsci on my strom, and it just flat worked better than the manta, so I got the tall for the fjr. Put about 400 miles on it so far...btw, I am 6'1'' with a 32" inseam.

Love it in the lowest position, with no back pressure. at two inches up, the air is still, and just a hint of flutter at the helmet is alleviated with a slight tuck. At the highest setting the flutter is pronounced - oh - and it whistles a bit.... Overall, better than the monster.

Stock = 5

Monster Eurocut = 8.5

CalSci = 9.2

(out of 10)
