There is nothing wrong with the current CCT, simply install it and forget about it pretty much for the life of the bike. If you still want a manual CCT try the APE part.

I went to the linked discussion with how-to. That discussion spoke of a fix in 2007. Then the CCT with the blue dot came up. Seems some CCTs have the upgrade without the blue dot. My engine is a 2008, sounds fine on start up, may be the new upgrade. At less than 4000 miles it can wait.
Correct, the redesign took place somewhere in model 2007. If you have an '07 and earlier with no dot, you'd be wise to replace it sooner than later.

So, which is it, '07 and earlier, or '09 and earlier?

My '09 has ~110K miles on it and I'm due for another valve check (never had to adjust it yet). I'll order the CCT and put it in, but I had always understood that it was the earlier models that were the problem.

As much as I'd like to get a new, or new to me Gen 3, this old bike still runs good and the value is down due to the miles, so hoping to get another 110K miles on it and try to get my money's worth!

EDIT: On Ron Ayres website:

I see the actual CCT is #6 ($90.92), What about also changing #9 & #10? Dampner 1 & 2 ($39.48 & $53.64). I know if I get that far to inspect them, but like to have the parts on hand. Has anyone seen these with excessive wear? or is it just the CCT?

I believe that by '08, the new design was normal. My '07 had the old style.

Probably should get the CCT gasket too.

I haven't had mine open in quite some time so I don't know what the dampers look like at this point. I am still running the originals at 152,000 miles. (Haven't heard of anyone having to replace them, but...) Original cam chain and sprockets too although I swapped the CCT at 40,000 or so.

I read the "Owosso method" and it looks to be not so bad. I think the dampners would be a bit of a challenge to change, so no go on that unless for some reason they're really chewed up.

From doing more research, I see that, yes, by the time mine was built they had improved on the design so it shouldn't be a problem, altho if I plan to keep this in good running order maybe it would be an idea here sometime to replace it. Wheel bearings and the shock pivot assembly would probably be before it on the list, but who knows.

Good reading regardless.

I hope you have better luck than me at the 110,000 mile valve check. Mine had been in spec up until that point, but a couple needed adjustment this time. I came across a problem with the timing being a little off and the problem is probably due to some cam chain wear. I opted to not deal with chain replacement at this time and the bike is still running great. For more info, my thread is here:
