Camera problem

Well I think my Canon S1IS died.

The third picture I took today (and all the rest) came out like this:

That is the view through the viewfinder & the picture.

My guess is the chip died.

Anyone know about digital cameras & how much to fix it?

Any recommendations on a new camera?

I loved this one, even I could take good pictures with it and it had a 10X optical zoom.

If you have recomendations for a new one I would prefer one that uses compact flash memory cards (so I don't have to buy new cards).

My only problem with this camera was the shutter lag.

Compact flash is a dying breed. Toss it. I sell most of the brands: Sony, Kodak, Fuji, Canon, etc. Each new generation gets better, and cheaper. SD memory is currently used in most brands, with Sony sticking to their own "stick." Digital cameras, like PCs, are usually not worth your time or money to keep in an operative condition. Buy new, and don't look back. Phil

I was hoping for the "it can be fixed for $2.99 answer!

Well it gave my a good life (its an S1IS, 3.2MP and I see they are up to S5IS 8.0MP now).

Since you sell cameras, any recommendations for someone who loves to take pictures but has no skill?

Kodak has the top reputation for ease-of-use. I have never heard of a lemon-model from this brand. If you want best of the best, for long range, wide angle, etc., look at the Canons, with interchangeable lense capability (Rebel, etc.)

I had a S1 1S do the same, the CCD went bad. Here's the good news. Go to the Cannon website and they will fix your camera for free; it is a know problem with this model. I believe you have to call them up and they will go through a diagnostic routine to make sure it is the CCD. (Basically if your viewfinder and pictures are trash but your menu features are okay, your probably going to get your camera fixed by Canon) If it is the CCD, they will send you instructions and a mailer to send your camera back for repair or replacement. I sent mine back and after a couple weeks got a refurbished S3 1S. Good luck.

Had the same issue with my Canon A70, twice! They fixed it once about a year ago. It's time to send it in again. My stepfather has the same problem with his A70.

Glad I could help. The only thing I had to do (because they didn't repair. but sent me upgraded camera, S3 1S from an S1 1S) was buy a new memory card, as the upgraded camera had the smaller type card. This I gladly did willingly as the replacement camera had double the memory, 6 mp from 3 mp, a 12X zoom from 10 X zoom and various other upgraded features.

HARDLY a dying breed. Only in the consumer grade cameras, due to SD FINALLY almost matching speed and capacity while being physically much smaller.

Us professionals use pro grade bodies that do not need smaller cards. We need high capacity, high speed and weather/elmental proofing that the CF format offers.

Some pro bodies offer dual CF slots, some offer a CF and a SD, most are single CF.

SD also SUCKS royally when you are in the field and need to change them frequently or are outdoors with gloves on.

I am most definitely not an expert but want to take better photos....so I just bought a Rebel xTi.

So you are recommending the Rebel digital SLR even though it uses a CF card?

Canon paid shipping to send the old camera in and today I got my brand new free PowerShot S5IS.

Just got off the phone with Canon, WOW over a 5 year old camera and it is getting fixed. Have purchased 2 other canons just because they work so well.

Great, you did even better than I. They sent me an S3 as a replacement (and I was extremly happy with that) but I got my replacement over a year ago so that's what had made the difference. I'm lov'n my S3 so I'm sure you'll love the S5.

Glad to hear Canon took good care of you. As for Kodak, their cameras are good, but their programs for the computer suck. I have updated my fiances and it looses photos and all the information that you add to your photos. Kodak just said tuff luck.
