My son graduated college last month and we are 3 weeks into our ride to Alaska.

He and I are seeing the redwoods today (yes with rain) and look to camp on the north side of the Bay Bridge tonight. Any suggestions about good grounds, or places to avoid?

He is also interested in seeing a rodeo at some point. I know it's not a cowboy area, but are there any close enough for usto see City tomorrow? What about near Yosemite tomorrow?

From SFO we start to turn east toward Utah, then Maryland. Not going to make LA or AZ on this trip.

I'm not from the area so you might get better advice from some of the locals, but I stayed at Brannon Island S.P. in Rio Vista back in 2008 and it was pretty good...it does get windy though.I also stayed in a private campground in Olema(north of S.F. on HGWY 1 near Point Reyes) that was real nice, but was always packed on the weekends.I think you may need a membership for that one now.

There are state parks and campgrounds north of SF, but it's Friday in the first weekend of summer, so good luck. Might try Salt Point SP, north of Bodega Bay. I know the park we like just outside of Bodega Bay is already fully reserved, cuz I just called there. She said Salt Pt. is a little less in demand. Camping fees in the state parks are way up now--$35 a night, but they have all the facilities.

If you don't mind a little roughing it, I like the National Forest Service campgrounds that you can find all over. Pit toilets, but a table, fire ring, and water in the campgrounds. Or you can just pitch a tent in any national forest.

Thanks all.

As mentioned, Tim graduated college last month. We Talked about this trip for two years and it's been great. The idea was both incentive for him to finish, plus a chance to reconnect before he finds a job and moves on to where we all know that life takes us. (Anybody looking for a Fire Protection Engineer, preferably on the east coast?)

We ended up riding the redwoods and Route 1 from 101 in Mendocino and having a good time. Having gotten soaked today we got a room to dry out. We're calling this our Wet Coast Tour. :)
