Another step you might try is, after uninistalling all the most recent stuff you added and running a registry cleaner program like Easy Cleaner: find someone with Win2K (home or pro depending on what you have). get a copy of the explorer.exe file (in the c:\windows\system32 folder) and copy it to the same place on your hdd.

Actually, blame bearshare. All the P2P apps like bearshare, limewire and the like are now packed full of spyware, malware and other worms. Chances are, something slipped in and removed some reg entries for WMP. Glad to see a simple remove and reload did the trick.

Jeff, Make sure you have all of your MS updates. There are several available to patch Windows Media Player.

For an alternative that's feature packed and free - try Winamp.

A little late getting into this thread, but I'm curious...do you get the explorer.exe error when you're looking in a folder containing a downloaded AVI?

The reason I ask, explorer.exe will crash if you're browsing a folder containing a corrupted AVI file. That's not to say the file may actually be corrupted, but if you're downloading an AVI video from your favorite sharing or porn site :) and the file is incomplete, i.e., still downloading, explorer.exe, which is "running" while viewing open folder with "My Computer", or browsing a folder with Nero's (or any program's) browse window, interprets an incomplete AVI as being corrupt and bingo...CRASH! And you have to close down the folder window.

Don't go chasing your tail on this, if the above scenario describes your situation. Simply DON'T have a folder window open where/when you're downloading an AVI. Wait 'til it's finished.

Do a Google search for "Explorer AVI Problem" and you'll see it's a very common problem.
