Thursday, May 26, 2010, meet @ the Starbucks at 13345 Lincoln Way in Auburn, which is ~100 yards west of Foresthill Road and just south of I-80 at its Foresthill exit. Chevron gasoline is available at the corner about 75 yards from Starbucks. Kickstands up at 9:30 am. Rough guess is that you'll be back in Auburn between 4:00 and 5 pm.

This is a REMINDER -- originally found in post 400 of the "Wheaton finally rides to California" thread.

The "Back Way" is the alternative to I-80 for all but about 15 miles from Auburn to Truckee. It is mostly what is left of historic Old Hwy.40, with a few exceptions, and the route back down the hill will have some differences from the route up. Our route will take us by Donner Lake and all the way around Lake Tahoe . . . BEFORE tourist season arrives -- LOTS of photo ops this time of year with clouds, blue sky, deep blue lake and snow on the mountain tops. Lunch probably at The Landing, on the Lake in Kings Beach.

For those wishing to return to the south, you can exit over Echo Summit (50 W)* or via Luther Pass (89 S) and Carson Pass (88 W) from South Lake Tahoe, but you'll miss some of the best scenery on the west shore of Lake Tahoe (e.g., Cascade Lake and Emerald Bay) and a different, twisty set of roads in some of the areas where we earlier ascended the I-80 corridor via old Hwy 40.

At route's end, we'll come through Meadow Vista on Placer Hills Road and arrive at the I-80 W on-ramp, OR you can follow me (in turning right 75 yards before that on-ramp) through Clipper Gap onto Dry Creek, Joeger, Mount Vernon, Baxter Grade, Wise and Gold Hill Roads in escorting Wheaties via delightful foothill twisties to the intersection of Gold Hill and Hwy 193 just west of Newcastle. From there, he will proceed west on 193 to his uncle's in Lincoln, and I will return home to Auburn.

* Check CalTrans Road Conditions for Hwy 50 closure and detour due to construction -- it may have been extended due to recent storms slowing work schedule.

Geez, I wish I was unemployed for the summer. Rich, have fun and don't hurt those boys.

Yeesh, OM! Never heard of the expression "be careful what you wish for"?? You may end up like me -- though I decided to start calling it "retired", since the only real difference is that the latter typically (but not necessarily) connotes a continuing stream of income and benefits. ;)

Rich, have fun and don't hurt those boys.
They've just reached California this morning, and the "Rolling Mook Cluster Feck"* is about to reach critical mass. As you know, the Cali collective has a bunch of twisty, technical and scenic stuff to throw at our hapless guests for the next week. By the time they leave next Friday, they'll be yearning for that midwest straight flat stuff -- there will be no complaining about that stretch from Denver to Illinois on their way back. It's kinda like sex, if you recall** -- great fun, but after about the 100th orgasm in a week, you start to think that getting a little sleep might be a nice change-up. :p

Brother, I really wanna run with that, but we both know the peanut gallery'd push their way in and your thread would go right to hell.
I have got to tell you, you Northern California freaks make me as nervous as hell when you start talking about "Back Way Rides"!

Sounds way too scary close to "Back Door Man" as performed by Jim Morrison and The Doors. jes' sayin' and nuff' said! Perverts!

Back Door Man

------The Doors

Written by Willie Dixon

Wha, yeah!

C'mon, yeah

Yeah, c'mon, yeah

Yeah, c'mon

Oh, yeah, ma

Yeah, I'm a back door man

I'm a back door man

The men don't know

But the little girl understand

Hey, all you people that tryin' to sleep

I'm out to make it with my midnight dream, yeah

'Cause I'm a back door man

The men don't know

But the little girls understand

All right, yeah

You men eat your dinner

Eat your pork and beans

I eat more chicken

Than any man ever seen, yeah, yeah

I'm a back door man, wha

The men don't know

But the little girls understand

Well, I'm a back door man

I'm a back door man

Whoa, baby, I'm a back door man

The men don't know

But the little girls understand

Says the peanut gallery member who was seeking male room mates on this cluster feck only last week while advertising that he would be takin' Viagra, Cialis and Extenze!?!

. . . and suggesting to a room mate that he should drink enough Old Bushmills that the bedbugs wouldn't dare bite?!?

It is a beautiful ride and I'll join the sightseeing if nothing intervenes. So many options got closed out due to weather, it's hard to believe.

I expect US 50 will continue to be closed over Echo Summit, so no return via 50 unless you can persuade CHP you should be allowed to take the Old Meyers Grade and Echo Summit Rd around the construction. (I almost had it unitl the SOB asked for a pass). North on 89 is worth the trip anyway.

If anyone is looking for a place to stay, let me know and I'll ask the boss. We do have a 5-bedroom house with a couple extra rooms and beds. No kids, but you'll probably end up with a cat or dog :glare: .

Wish I had seen that before I offered to share a room with him in Fortuna  I hope He doesn't bring that sheep porn that Bust sent him

A little quiet around here. Is this ride still on?

The weather for Wednesday is looking kinda wet. Thursday is supposed to be dry.

Someone said that Rich only plans rides in the rain. :p

I'm mounting two new tires this afternoon. Both are slicks and the rear has cord showing on the left shoulder for about 20% of the circumference.

Weather forecast says partly cloudy with around 10 mph winds for the scheduled ride times, but highs in the low 40s on the planned route. While snow may fall in the vicinity of the roads tonight, it appears that there should be none sticking to the roadways. Will be checking (the always unreliable) weather forecasts tonight, but for the moment, I'm still planning on being at the meet up spot.

Too much shit hitting fan, and doesn't look like I'm going to have tires on to have a bike to ride. Moreover, it looks like it's going to snow/rain tonight and early in the morning in the Tahoe Basin and over Donner summit. High temperatures for the day up there will be roughly 41 to 43 degrees with a 10 to 13 hour wind blowing across snow that hasn't yet melted = pretty damn COLD ride. Due to lack of tread (and too much else to have to address today), however, I'm not going to be able to lead this ride. I haven't done a MapSource route, because MapSource maps has at least one an error in it that makes it a mess (e.g., a one way segment that does not exist at WEst Paoli Land over I-0).

Sorry guys -- real life is intruding here.

Wheatie and Airboss -- t'was most good riding with you the last few days. I'm hoping you are able do a ride through the foothills or otherwise enjoy the day before you gotta head back.

I will just add that I-80 is closed due to snow and spinouts. The live cam look at I-80 at Kingvale looks real bad for a Sierra ride tomorrow. https://video.dot.ca.gov/asx/Kingvale-eb-80.asx

I could step up and lead a foothill ride from the same location if there is interest. I would take the Foresthill Bridge and go down Old Foresthill Rd to 49, then North on 49 to Salmon Falls Rd and on into El Dorado Hills. Left on Green Valley to Lotus Coloma Rd, for a quick tour of the Marshall Gold Discovery, On into Placerville for lunch. After Lunch head up Mosquito Road towards Swansboro taking in some challenging single-lane and an old wood suspension bridge, back over to 193 via Rock Creek, and get everyone back to Auburn by 3:00.

Let me know.

Great suggestion, Tom... tons and tons of roads to ride up in them thar hills! B)

Here is a prospective road map for the day, a little different from what I described. It would put us in Murphy's for lunch, and there is a lot to do there anyway. Then in honor of Busta, we could take Sheep Ranch Road to Volcano where I can show you some real fun goat-paths. on the way to Placerville. https://goo.gl/maps/BqEPLink to Map

This has a really cool ride out to Pardee Reservoir through Jackson and Stoney Creek Rd, then up to Murphy's. This takes in some classic foothill twisties, rivers, canyons, reservoirs and the Motherlode.

Of course if you guys want a day to catch your breath before tacking the long journey back, I'll more than understand.

Tom,

I'm all for that...if you don't mind leading us midwesterners around. It might just only be Karl and I...you still up for that? Don't feel obligated at all. Let us know.

I will send you a PM just in case you aren't monitoring the thread. We could meet at the original spot or we could meet you down further your way for breakfast...let us know.

Rich...thanks for riding with us in norcal...we enjoyed following around those great roads. Sorry about not being able to ride with you again. We'll see you around somewhere maybe.

Tom. Some suggestions if you are open to it and/or if the riding schedule allows.

Take the boys over on Irish Hill Road to Ione and skip the crappy part of Hwy 49 between Hwy 16 and Jackson. You can jog on back to Stoney Creek on 88/104 or take Sutter Ione Road.

I would also bypass San Andreas and the not so fun part of Hwy 49 between San Andreas and Angels Camp and instead detour off of Hwy 12 onto Pool Station Road and then take Hwy 4 into Angels Camp and then into Murphy's( I mean take Murphy's grade not Hwy 4 into Murphy's). Don't forget to take the boys to the Ironestone Winery/Vineyards.

Also, give the boys a taste of Ram's Horn grade.

Wish I could have come on this ride with you guys! Can't get away from work. :(

You guys ride safe and have lots of fun! :)
