Just opened it for the first time and now cannot get it to close. The top red button stays depressed and I cannot get it to spring outward. I've been over the manual with no help. Any hints? Thanks in advance I really hope I'm being stupid. :dribble:

The key has to be in and the lock cylinder turned to open or close it. Also, the lid has to seat just right or the latching mechanism wont grab it and close properly. HTH (but if it does you're stupid).

This probably won't help either, but when I was putting the cover and light kit in my V46, I did take the lock off the case just to see the mechanism (I'm an engineer, sue me). When the lock was off the case, that latch button stayed in and the latch didn't work. Stick it back on the box, works.

One thing to note, the port side screw in the latch box (if you look, there are only 2 screws that hold the latch mechanism in the box) was stripped from the factory. A simple cleaning of the plastic trapped in the threads fixed that. Is the latch flush with the front of the case? If not, your latch could be loose, causing the issue.

try placing the key in and turn to right until the carring handle pops out, then press it back in and see if you can cycle back through the process, hope that works

I think you're experiencing operator error. I'm an expert, because I went through the same thing with mine when I first got it. Fortunately, my wife was around to bail me out. :dribble:

This is hard to explain with words, but I'll try.

The red button is for "open"; the black bar right above it (with "Press" on it) is for "latch". If you press the latch bar with the lid open, the mechanism will go into a "semi-latched" state, which prevents it from actually latching the lid, but won't allow the red button to pop it back out (the red button will be "in", but kind of loose). I suspect this happens to people (like me) going "how does this thing work?", with the lid open, of course, so you can see it.

If you think this has happened, just pull the latch bar out from the bottom; you can probably do it with a thumbnail. It shouldn't be tight, but it needs a little help to pop back out. Once the bar is back out, you should be good to go. Just don't press the latch bar in with the lid open.

All of the above is assuming the key is turned to the right (unlocked).

Hope this helps.

+1

I have experienced this a few times when I tried to latch the cover and was not aggressive enough. You can also grab the top of tlhe latch and press down and in and it sometimes works.

I would almost bet everyone has experienced this once in awhile. Like you I had a hard time figuring it out but once you do it is no problem.

THANKS!!

It was definitely operator error. Pressing the latch forward causes the red button to pop out and latches the top case. Yes I am a stupid.

Many humble thanks James

Also stoopid here. Must have taken me a half hour to figure this out. Thought something was wrong with the Givi. Not that the instructions were any help with ANYTHING.

The rest of us aren't "brilliant", merely..uhm..er..experienced--yeah, that's the word I was looking for--e x p e r i e n c e d.

Mostly because we did the same thing or something similar when we first got OUR Givi topcase.
