Can't Ride For 6 Weeks.

Well, after about a year and a half of dealing with the stinkin pain I went and did it. Yep, thursday Sept 1st I had my bad disc taken out of my back (no not disc brakes ). The down side is i cannot ride for at least 6 weeks. In the mean time I plan on doing some farkeling. I already installed my new hyabusa bar ends. Next I am going to take advantage of the motorcycle Larry's discount and get a fork brace. I will keep an eye on the forum and build up bike riding envy. But when I feel better watch out! It's hell getting old, 37 y/o and counting B)

Hope you're recovering well from back surgery. I had minor surgery 3 weeks ago and the doc said no riding for at least 2 weeks...at least it wasn't 6!

Took a long ride yesterday (1st long one in 3 weeks) and thoroughly enjoyed it. You'll be back in the saddle before you know it. I took my time off the bike to order a Sargent seat w/ backrest, a Givi v46 top box and a North Face duffle for inside the Givi.

That's a good way to spend your down time. I was going to suggest shipping your bike to me so it could get some road time instaed of sitting, but it looks like it will be busy getting improved. Here's to a speedy and thorough recovery!

Laminectomy? They are SO much less invasive than in the past. When they send you for physical therapy, the best thing you can do is attack P/T like it's an enemy you want to destroy. Ignore pain, ignore discomfort and push, push, PUSH at the P/T. When you are done you will be MUCH better for it. Been there, done that, cut up the t-shirt.

If it doesn't work, and you start thinking about a spinal fusion, look into disc replacement instead. It's less invasive (the surgery takes 4 hours unlike fusion's 6) and rather than lock to the two vertebrate together, it restores motion. J & J has a replacement on the market, some of the other big companies have them in development.

Contact me if you need to go that route, tell me where you are and I may be able to refer you to a nearby spine surgeon--Obviously I work in clinical trials so I have some knowledge about where to go.

Discectomy or laminectomy, both suck! Having endured a partial disc rupture in March, it took many weeks of PT and epidurals to get me back to work, let alone back on the bike.

Kinda hard to be the surgeon when you need surgery!

Best advice, follow your doctors instructions and get rest. Take it easy bending over the bike farkeling! I spent my down time farkeling as well. Time well spent.

However, my advice is before any ever tries to do anything else to your back, you need 2nd, 3rd, and 4th opinions! And no offense to the forum, opinions on the forum do not count!

SPinal surgery is still archaic but improving. But before they ever lay scapel to my spine, I will be traveling to Mayo, Froter, USC and a few other places.

why a battery tender ? before surgey put bike on center stand and when you are able to get around and walk and stand for a while start the bike up and pretend you are on a trip. ( Let the kid that in side you escape and relive your child hood ,Oh what sweet memories of riding a bike. You also keep your battery up also and helps keep everyting oiled, Like bearing, seals,rods pistons. What do you say a good idea or a bad idea ???

I had a Corpectomy (look it up) done Dec. 1st and couldn't ride for 3 months. Affected 4 vert. and 3 disks. Much better now! Know how you feel!

The procedure is called minimaly invasive micro discectomy. the paperwork prior to surgery was labeled just plain lamenectomy with matrix. anyway i have only a one inch wound just above the ol' butt-crack. The surgeon didnt take any bone just the portion of the disc that was displacing the nerve.

I read up on disc replacement and it does look good if i need to go that route.

I also am from the healthcare field and worked in the hospital for 8 years scanning the unfortunate for their post op back surgery. That's why it took me so long to move forward with the surgery. Now for the past 7 years I have went from using the "stuff" to selling the "stuff". I like sales a bit more than the alternative. Where do you work Yanktar?

Yeah, the only thing that i could think of the last few weeks prior to surgery was how much riding can i get in before what you call the back-hack. I did do a 312 miler up through Petoskey and Mackinaw the Sunday before the procedure.

Get well soon, Mo. "L5 -S1" is certainly in my vocabulary and last year at this time I was on regular 30mg doses of morphine. So far I have avoided the knife but if yours works out well maybe I will consider it, too.

Yeah, I shredded the L5-S1 disc back in 1990...Avoided surgery with a good chiropractor and all kinds of exercise over the years. Usually I'm fine but occasionally it bothers me...

Man I know how you feel. I've been going crazy myself. I haven't riden for 5 weeks so far do to a herniated disk. I am going through PT and things are much better. They say I should be good as new in another 4 weeks. I am going to start riding to work to start building up slow. I have a trip planed in October and the Doc things I will be OK to go. :construction:
