Yanktar (or anyone else)-

Can you give me some insight on the disc replacement surgery?

[email protected]

I had a laminectomy 14 years ago (at the ripe old age of 24), and 1 1/2 years ago the same disc ruptured again. By the time the surgery got scheduled and came up, 40 days had passed and I was improving on my own, so I cancelled the surgery. I think I'm better today than I have been the last 14 years, but I still have problems somedays. I know it's only a matter of time before the big hurt starts again.

I thought the disc replacement was only a dream?

PM me, and tell me where you are. Johnson & Johnson actually has a replacement disc on the market--out of clinical trials. Others are testing competing devices supposedly better. You may be able to get into a Phase III trial.

But if it's getting better, you probably should look into physical therapy and daily exercises. When I re-injured my back in '99 (see above), the exercises the orthopedic surgeon gave me were AMAZING! In 2 weeks I was fine. I'm not a doctor or trained medical person, but my work and personal experience  has given me some insight and knowledge.

I was a good candidate for surgery but at the time I was unimpressed with the stats--despite very high "cure" rates, I looked into the numbers. 95% cured meant patients were now ambulatory--that means walking around. I never STOPPED walking around. So??? Then I saw that after 4 years most patients who had surgery and continuing treatment, and most patients WITHOUT surgery and continuing treatment, were about the same. Namely, in 4 years, with or without the surgery I would be in the same place. It was pretty much true.

My dad, though, had a laminectomy and it gave him back his life for 10 years or so.

I had a discectomy on L4/L5 in the Fall of 1988. Best thing I ever did. Put away my first official 1,000 mile day this May! Study the options as suggested above, but don't be afraid of the knife if it is the best solution indicated. Good luck with your rehab. I see a chiropractor for regular preventative maintenance, and do lots of stretching.

Good Luck Moby. Hope the recovery goes well. Six weeks eh? Just in time for a farewell color tour before winter. Whadda ya say?

10-4 escapeFJRtist. You are reading my mind about the color tour. I need to put on about another 1500 miles before the snow flies so that I have the winter to do my next maintanance.

BTW, is this screen moving or has my pain meds kicked in?

It sounds like the ol' back thang is a hot topic. I too went through the Physical therapy and stretching. Even had a tens unit, didn't do much to help relieve the pain. I just got sick and tired of starting out every day by munchin down some motrin, which can't be good long term especially on the stomach. Three MRIs later the disc just kept getting worse. Thanks for all the well wishes folks.

Catch ya later.

Moby,

Hope recovery is going well for you buddy! Get that 1,500 miles in! Salmon are running in the American River right now. I saw a 10 year old kid yank out a 33 lb Sokeye!

Come on down!

;)

You must be related to my wife. She came home from work and noticed that I was watching three shows at once. One was a superbike race and the other was a bow hunting show and a GNCC ATV race.. She said "why are you watching those things that you can't do right now?" Now you tell me that there are monster salmon running...Man, I am going crazy. :D

Oh well, I can take it, keep 'em coming :russian:

OH The Pain, the pain (between my ears, not my back)

I only checked under the cover to look at the FJR twice today. Maybe I'll feel better if I order more farkles.....? AAAAAaaaahh!

10-4, I guess she was just worried that i was torturing myself because my FJR is sitting in the garage along with my Quad, Bow and Fly rod.

My neighbor caught me sitting on the FJR last night. I wasn't being weird but just got done putting some spacers to change the angle of the wind screen. I just wanted to run the screen up and down to see if i could tell a difference in the garage. :D Funny, it seems that the wind there stays the same.

Still waiting for my fork brace. Maybe I'll pull the air filter out today and check it.

Two weeks into the 6 weeks of immobilization for my shoulder, I climbed into the saddle of the FJR, just to see if it freaked me out or felt good. The FZ1 was a mess at the time...

Obviously, it felt GOOOOOOOD!!! I proved you can fix an FZ1 with "one hand tied behind my back"--my right. Of course, I'm right-handed.. :dribble:

My fork brace was shipped Aug 29th and hasn't got here yet. I really think the Katrina effect has rippled across the country's distribution system. I was hoping to have it before this weekends ride to, through and around Yosemite.

Moby, I fly fish, ride and pull strings (bows and guitars). I like your hobbies/sports.

Yanktar...you can fix a FZ-1 with one hand? I'm not sure I heard the story about the reason it needed fixing, but I guess you and your bike are all patched up? :dribble:

Organgevale,

"pull strings" oooh that one is too easy, man i am one sick ticket. either way that could be considered a hobby too. but seriously, the bow thing gets to me a little because i shoot archery league with my Dad on Tuesdays. I took first last year with my new Darton Avalanche Extreme. Talk about Farkles, you should see all the stuff that i have for that hobby. what do you shoot?

ps can't play the 6 string, dammit

I crashed sometime in February over a year ago--Friday the 27th, 04 about 1:50pm--not that I remember or anything <_< . I came around a blind turn and some @$$hat was on the right-hand viaduct trying to make an illegal left turn. Road grit from the sanders and "Oh SHIIIITTT!" hand on the brake and my front skidded out like a rubber band snapping. I don't remember going down, but I remember telling myself to let myself roll...When I stopped, flat on my back, I knew I was hurt but now how bad. I figured out I hadn't broken my back or neck and was in the middle of the road after this blind turn.

Got to my feet, actually my left foot, somehow, got to the curb, collapsed and waited for somebody to call the ambulance...Right shoulder, posterior dislocation (out the back), badly sprained right ankle (I was sure it was broken, but no, a lot of tendon and ligament damage). Some bruises on my knee. I THINK I landed on my right elbow, but the Olympia armor is SO awesome my elbow was fine. I was in P/T for the ankle for 2 months and for the shoulder for 6 months.

The bike went down on its right side. The Yamaha GYTR sliders and the ThrottleMeister did their job. The fairing and headlight shell were damaged, the tank was dented, the Yoshi can was dented. and some other stuff.

Me, looking about as unhappy as I felt (there's an even worse shot of me--with no shirt due to the temp cast--I'll spare you):

The bike, after I took lots of damaged stuff off...WITH JUST MY LEFT HAND!

All fixed!!! Can't even tell this side was what went down and was damaged!

I think I was a lot more hurt than the FZ1 was. Nothing serious--all bolt-on stuff.

Yanktar,

Holy sh!t, that's gotta hurt. Those yoshi's look cool, i bet that they sound even better.

BTW, how many bike ramps do you own? There is a sh!t pile of them in the background. :D

Hey... apetoid lied! You don't look a bit like Lenin! :D ;)

By the way, sorry for all that pain you went through, but at least the doctors prescribed a throttle simulator for you!

LOL! Jeez, TWN, I almost wet my pants on that! Yeah, I've got hair on top and clean shaven on the face. And I don't wear old wooly suits! Glad I wasn't drinking soda or my computer would have had a NASTY spit-take!

Apetoid is just a little twisted. I think he thinks Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Mick Jagger and Jane Fonda ALL look like Lenin   :haha:

It's a triple ramp--the side ramps will only hold 600 or 700 lbs, but the center holds 1300. Trying to ride a bike up a ramp with no place for your feet is a recipe for disaster--or a circus tryout! :atv:

As for the throttle simulator--you got that ALL wrong. They figured I was half as handsome as James Bond, so they gave me half of a jump-jet suit! I tried it once but flew around like a balloon some kid let go of....believe that I've got some GREAT real estate for you!

I'm Baaaack. Yep only after 4 weeks, the Surgeon cleared me to get back on the bike. I am healing up nicely. Took advantage of the Michigan weather today and went on a short 50 mile ride. Man, I almost forgot how much fun it was. I do however have to take it easy and only ride for about 45 min then take a break.

I only had to use the Mag Blasters once today. Some effin idiot cage rolled through a stop sign coming off of the X-way. He was doing about 25 mph heading right towards me.... The horns performed their duty perfectly.

Glad to be back. Hope to see ya on the street!
