Some some kids probably "attempted" to steal (My) sons 2000 Integra while he was in the movie theater.

The car has a key chipped immobilizer stock, so they did nothing more than trash the steering column, ignition, bits and pieces... They actually snapped the sttering wheel off the steering column (I so wish the airbag would have blown up in the thieves face).

They obviously left in a hurry and unsuccessful leaving behind greasy finger prints, lots of blood (poor guys cut themselves in the attempt), hope I don't get sued for that  ... along with some biscuits and gravy purchased down the road at Chicken Express.

I will be heading over to the theater in hopes management will allow me to review the surveillance footage of the lot from Friday night. If I get lucky and see the thieves even from a distance. I will head over to the Chicken Express that closed the same time the movie started to see if they will help out.

All of this because I suspect the LEO's have not raised a finger other than jot down a report. Can I spoon feed this info to the LEO's or have the Theater/Chicken joint forward the images? Or am I just spinning wheels needlessly.

Stolen good and damages should easily exceed 1.5K

Here is a photo, and opinions welcome.

You're spinning your wheels as you have already observed. The responding police have done all they are going to do. Even if the vehicle had been taken itself, the report is all they are going to do. You might have luck with a detective, maybe there has been a rash of these in the area. It's not that they don't care, they are to busy to do more. I would'nt want thier job for what they get paid. It's sad but true. :dribble: Did I answer correctly, Patch and AJ?

NMRR pretty much nailed it, IMO. If there'd been an associated kidnapping, murder or even an actual battery on a person, the police would spend more of their scarce resources of money and time. As it is, an insurance claim is the activity on which I'd be looking to spend my time. What a friggin' mess the bastards made of that steering column.

You'll get no answers. Pay the deductible and move on.

There's a sign in the theatre parking lot, I'm guessing, which states something to the effect of "not responsible for damage..." etc etc. Unless there's a dead body in the parking lot, I'd be surprised if the footage from that night is still available.

Insurance on that 11 y/o car is for full coverage $500 deductable is $200 a month for a 20 y/o driver with clean record.

Car's only worth 5000ish. End result is liablity only.

On a good note... I found a steering column and "most" of the bits and pieces at in import yard for $100. A fraction of what I had forecast.

Scotty,

Sorry to hear about this happening to you...many years ago this happened to me as well... and it is a Baaaaad feeling.

If this was me, I would push this matter from the Police/Detectives/Chief of Police and to the Mayor if necessary. We pay enough Tax Dollars and this is the Minimum of expectancy a legal citizen should receive. As in many things, including Yamaha Service, I am NOT a lay down and get results... so should you.

We Americans today should not be so Quick to throw up the White Flag if we don't get a Twitter like response.

May the force (Justice) be with you!

Scotty,

Also on a side note, if you have Comprehensive Insurance/Theft, the Insurance Company can go After the Thieves and get your deductible back if you have to spend any.

Mine, State Farm, when an uninsured motorist hit, got me back my deductible of $500 a year later. They tracked the individual down (then out of state) and sent me my check.

Ask your Agent for help and details.

I watched two men attempt to get into a car parked at the movies. The alarm went off and scared them off. The two morons ran inside a McDonalds and sat in the window seat, watching for the police. I called dispatch and the patrol officer grabbed them sitting in their car at a gas pump, outside the McDonalds. I identified the two men and they were arrested. Since they did not complete the car theft the charge was vehicle tampering. Bad for them was the drugs they found, on them, and in their car.

Now they get their day in court and I take the day off work to testify. As I wait in the courtroom there is conflict with one of the attorneys involved, case postponed until next week.

I take another day off work to see these guys get justice. After waiting through the morning session and having lunch in the courthouse cafe, the defendants attorney stipulated to the facts that needed my testimony. I was excused and the defendant pled to a first offense possesion charge and was released.

My advice would be to not waste your time.

Even with multiple eyewitness testimony and the cops catching them at the scene it won't get your car fixed.

You will be the one punished, with the hours spent wasted, let it go and move on.

I'm not the type to roll over and go away quietly. I will be a pain in someones ass (other than my wife) until some reasonable attempt to at least review the surveillance tapes will be my winter hobby.

The first road block was the local sheriff positioned at the theater this evening was less than helpful or supportive in regard to reviewing the footage. I made it clear that it was not his call to make. That I will take it up with the theater management/owner.

Either he forward my request to them, or I will. Than I needed to hear back from them on the issue either positive or negative result.

He was quick to inform me they did not have to allow me to review the footage. I responded with, but that's not your call now is it?

I walked away with the feeling the parking lot camera's may be fake props.

My 2 cents (at this rate I'm gonna be broke)...I, obviously, can't speak for other agencies. Like any other profession including doctors, plumbers, lawyers, etc, some are better than others. If it were my agency, we'd follow up as long as there was something to follow up on. It's not unrealistic to expect an officer or detective (depending on the agency) to check for video surveilance or lift fingerprints IF they are sufficient to lift (many people have very skewed ideas about how finger prints work from watching C.S.I.) Also, even IF they get finger prints, they still have to have a person to match them to if they aren't already in a database. If they're teens who are new at this that's a very real possiblity. Don't expect it to be handled like a homicide because it isn't.

Crap like this pisses most of us off because it's happened to one of us or our family members before and, contrary to popular belief, we're people too. Also, if a person took it upon themselves to bring in a video, I'd review it, attempt to authenticate it, and add that to the report/case file. One other thing, where I work we often get hammered with calls for service...having said that, the more serious, the more time alotted to it. Something like this isn't exactly small beans, but if it's "work on this" or "work on a rape", I'll be working on the rape...nothing against your son or his car and it isn't that I don't care...it's PRECISELY that I DO care and don't want to see the MORE serious things happen. Try calling the officer who took the report and follow up with him (not badger the piss outta him). Communication goes a long way.

he needs to clean his carpets. that thing's a pit!

beyond that, in this day of bankrupt cities, there are going to be fewer and fewer public services. reconsider liability only insurance on things you can't afford to replace on the spot with cash. take up recovery as a personal thing and don't be surprised that a PD (with cops being laid off and equipment going unrepaired) if they are choosing to spend what little is left of their budget on higher priorities... like traffic enforcement (for the money it brings in).

I did have the tapes reviewed. There was nothing to see due to the camera angle. Other cars protecting the theft. It did take my prodding at the corporate level to gain the support necessary.

When I was asked if there was anything further they could do to assist, I asked they review the security camera's positioning and procedures to assist the next victim.

The carpets were actually very clean (prior to the theft) Other than the wear that should be expected on a 150K plus miles original mat.

Steering column, wheel with airbag will be installed today after a Honda Moly rub down. Recode the immobilizer/new keys tomorrow.

Scotty,

Sorry this event did not turn out a little better for you. It is a baaaad feeling when things like this happen and you are helpless to do anything about it...other than to Pay $$$.

All the Best!
