My 04 has 42k for mileage and this spring I want to change the Cam Chain Tensioner before the motor does like Ionbeams and RadioHowies. Does anyone have the part # for those. I'm just checking because while checking with my dealer a while back he said they have a new part number for the CCT. Just want to make sure I have the most current one in my motor. TIA

Is yours making noise? If not, why change it?

Regardless, you can get the part # from Yamaha's website. You go to the 'parts' sections and look it up. And only the 'new' part number is available. You shouldn't even be able to buy the old one.

Mine is not making any noise yet, but then again I do wear ear plugs when I ride. Just want to do some PM to prevent anything bad from happening.

The old CCT number is 5JW-12210-01-00; the new number is 5JW-12210-10-00. If you do a part search on the Yamaha web site it will show the old CCT P/N for your '04, but when the dealer orders the part they can only get the new P/N. The dealer will be told that the '04 P/N is superseded and replaced by new P/N 5JW-12210-10-00.

first thing in the morning stone cold...crank up the bike (inside a garage with door open is good to amplify sounds)

listen while on high idle for "marbles in a can" sounds coming from the right side (sitting on the bike)

if none...no need to do anything

order it and keep it around until needed, if you want - also order a gasket and I ordered both bolts as well

I have one in my parts bin for future use

good approach: wait till the valves need checking at 25k, 50k, etc.

if the valves need adjusting, then also change the cam chain and the CCT at the same time

I would also change my CCT every other valve check anyway, I believe or every 50k miles or so

cheap insurance

I'd hate to be on a trip or somewhere else and hear the marbles warning. That'd freak me out.

No offense Mike, but you have reason to be freaked out. The rest of us don't need to buy into CCT 'hysteria'.

110k out of my first CCT. 113K on the current one with no noise, and no plan to swap it out anytime soon.

Mine made noise mainly when engine was warm or hot, when first fired up it wasn't as bad. The sound is very evident like metallic marbles or clatter going on, not normal engine sound.

The CCT is only about $70 online at like Bikebandit or mrcycles (where I got mine). If it's worth a piece of mind for you, go for it. It's not that hard, and it's not real expensive to buy.

My CCT thread.

no offense taken

"ya pays ya money (or not) and ya take ya chances"

I had plenty of warning from the bike and Howie and waited 3 days too long. Bought the CCT on a Wed, it came in on Monday, and the engine grenaded on the Sat in between

I'm just suggesting, if anyone's concern is worth $75, then it's not much effort to change it...especially when the new designed CCT seems a better working unit (longer plunger with different spring) than the old one which is documented to fail at some point, or at least cause stress when the noise starts...and there's no track record when (miles on the engine) that will happen.

My new used engine is an '05 with 17k miles on it now (10k in Dec when installed), and still has the stock old design CCT in it. There's really no reason not to change it at some interval to hedge it needing it 1000 miles away from home. I guess I could throw the replacement in my tool bag, along with my long, skinny flat blade screwdriver, ratcheting box end, and shorty/stubby box end wrenches. Small flashlight and a copy of the serenity prayer and I'd probably be good to go anywhere the noise crops up. Would hate to use hours of potential riding replacing a CCT.

It'll be opened up for valve checks anyway. Good time to consider changing the CCT to the new improved design.

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm heading down south to NC this summer and just wanted to make sure everything was trouble free. I'll listen REAL close to engine sounds when I fire it up this spring and go from there.

I look at it this way the original design has proved to be inferior.

I have to tear it down to do a valve check anyway (good time to change it).

I can always make more money, I cannot make more time. So I would rather do it on my schedule not murphy's.

Thats why they call it PREVENTIVE maintenance.
