What model year did Yamaha bring in the 'new improved CCT'? ... the one with the dot of paint on it (blue/green?). Most of the discussion I've seen vis a vis early replacement has been confined to Gen 1 and early Gen 2 (2007 and prior).

I think it came part way through the 2007 model year. My 2007 had the old style. I believe all '08 and newer had the updated CCT but I would want to verify - especially if I had an '08.

Ross, hasn’t the CCT been updated again after the 2010 model year?
Not sure. There was the blue dot version which replaced the original problematic one. There was a green dot CCT that came later but I don't know if it was changed again or not. Maybe they ran out of blue paint for the dot...

I'm curious about what year they started to be a problem. I have an early NA gen 1 (serial number 9). Never had a problem, but given the reputation I changed it as a preventative maintenance item last valve adjustment. Before installing the replacement, I compared spring force between the 18-1/2 year old CCT with >300,000kms and the new green-dot unit and found only a few grams difference.

I have a 2006 which developed a rattling noise on the lower right side in 2015 with about 45000miles on it. I put a new CCT on that winter 2015-16 and it had the green dot. While playing with both i found the original (no painted dot) had a lot less spring force than the new one. Noise is gone and hasn't returned although i only have 60k on it now. Haven't been riding as much the last few years. actual odometer is 99833 km. i am going to try to hit the 100k km before winter storage.

Just an update to my first post. I had the tank off yesterday and got a good look at the CCT from the top. To my dismay there is no paint dot anywhere on the top. My bike was built in Feb 2008 and I felt sure it would have come with the new and improved CCT, but not so. I have 100,000 kms on the motor and she purrs beautifully so I'm going to leave the CCT for now, but the next time I have all the plastic off I suppose I'll have to attend to it.

UPDATE: Had all the plastic off and inspected the cam chain up close. To my surprise there was about 1/4 inch slack in the chain. I suspect I was sitting on a time bomb and decided to go ahead and replace the CCT with a green dot. Very fiddly job, but thanks to info on this forum, especially Yamafitter and Rayzerman I was able to do the swap in under 2 hours. I wasn't sure if there'd still be some slack (normal ?) but the new CCT definitely has a stronger spring and pulled everything tight...very tight in fact. Absolutely no wiggle in the chain. Buttoned her up and hit the starter button..........purred like a kitten! Very glad I did this swap since I'm told there's almost no warning if your cam chain fails and that spells disaster. Check your CCTs and make sure you have the green dot version!

I have a 2001 model, should i be worried or very worried ?

Just replaced my OEM 2005 cct with new and all noise is gone. 51k and the spring pressure differential between old and new was substantial.

My '08 never had a paint dot on it either. I put a new green dot one in at 91000 miles.

I have a 2004 with just over 50k miles after reading most of this thread I’m thinking it would be wise to change my CCT even if I don’t hear any abnormal noises. Is the replacement of the CCT a difficult job? Thanks in advance for any info.

I did it on my '03 many years ago, and it was not a fun, or a quick job. The hardest thing about the replacement is that it is difficult to get to the mounting bolts, so removing the unit and installing the new one takes a lot of patience. There is very little space to turn the wrench handle, and even getting the wrench onto the bolts can be challenging. Here is one video that shows the process, but not too informative.

The Brain Trust replaced the CCT on my '04 at Tech Day back in 2011. I don't remember what my mileage was back then but it was prolly somewhere around 75K miles. It had a bit of chatter on the right side of the engine (where the CCT is) before the replacement. It's been quiet ever since.
