Ok dudes, this maybe a stupid question but...

I was just replacin my air filter and saw the back of the filter housing and I got to thinking: would cutting the back open like Cdog did work on a totally stock 04??

Yes, I've done the same mod to my '05...same box.

Right... but the question isnt about the "box" but rather the other mods that Cdog and WW had prior. that is different cans, power commanders etc.

Is simply opeing a hole, without doing anything else going to yield increases in perforamnce???

Well let me enlighten you doubting Thomas'.

I have a stock 01 and did this mod last night, and yes it does make the bike boogie better.

If you were running around with a gas mask on and some one removed it. Do you think that you could run faster and longer ????????

Well my bike now does.

Thanks Cdog I appreciate the extra herbs. :clapping: :yahoo:

Cheers

Excellent!

So, by all means, please share your before and after dyno results...............

G'day SkooterG,

As I said, the bike is standard except for the hole in the air box. Butt Dyno is finely tuned, and I did notice the difference this morning touring off to work again. Not HUGE, but I would guesstimate about 4hp.

This is using the SWAG formula.

I do believe that having all things stock, opening up the air box may not improve things much. I found with mine ('05, PCIII, K&N filter & stock pipes) that after performing the air box mod and & then re-tuned on the Dyno, more fuel had to be added at certain throttle positions compared to the original map. So either having a Power Commander or the Barbarian jump mod would be needed to increase fuel to get the low end improvement. Of course, having after market pipes would be a definite step up to that.

I don't claim to be a mechanic & don't even know if I have explained things correctly, but it's worked for me.

Toe rode my bike... he thought mine had a tad more umph... ask him

A Dyno is to quantify and measure what at times is obvious.....

When I get a hardon.... I dont need a ruler to know I have one

I am concerned about the "dust" shown in the first picture, before the mod. Were you running a stock paper filter, was there some other problem Etc?

I know I have had some with dust penetration on various applications before while running K&N's.

Now don't you think dust can come in the otherside also? Why is there so much doubt about this?

Gramps,

Can you share your map? I have an 05 with K&N, 2 Brothers, and thinking about doing the airbox but don't really want to splurge for the dyno if possible. What does a Dynojet session cost anyway?

Sure, PM me your email address, but with after market pipes you should really get it on the Dyno imho. Mine cost $150 but it was the second time & he just made adjustments the existing map. I believe an hours worth of time with a someone that knows what they're doing is anywhere from $300-400/hour, it could be different in your area.

Thanks for the reply Gramps.

I have done exactly the same mod on my new 08 as cdogman shows in his pictures. I did the same exact airbox mod on my 05 FJR earlier this year after reading the thread by wicked webby on his airbox mods. Both the 05 which I sold and the new 08 used the same Stainetune slip ons and K&N filter. So far the mod to the

08 is not quite as impressive as the 05 was with exactly the same mods. This may have something to do with the milage and the fact that the 05 & earlier FJR's are

geared lower and have a shorter wheelbase. I have also not had much time to tune on the new 08 bike. Don't get me wrong the 08 responded very well to the air

box mods but so far not as impressively as the 05 did. The 05 would power wheely at will after the mods in 1st and the 08 I have to really work at it. I need to get this

bike on a dyno with the new power commander I have ordered and find a street racing partner like WW did.
Mod what you want, but don't compare "wheely" action of Gen I to Gen II bikes. The longer swingarm accounts for most of the Gen II's greater resistance to lift the front end.

You sure you don't want a nice sport bike?

I already have one (06 ZX-14).

I finally got a dyno date with Ryan Schnitz to map my 08 FJR (Juky 16th). Right now the bike has the same air box mods as cdogman has along with the Stainetune slip ons and K&N filter I took off my 05 FJR. The 05 FJR I sold also had these same air box mods but I sold it before I got a chance to remap the power commander for the air box mods. With the restrictors in the Stainetune's removed I suspect they are as free flowing as any slip on out there including WW's or Dale Walkers pipes. I am running the bike now with the barbarian jumper mod which made a noticable improvement over stock after the air box mod. I will be removing the air injection and installing the power commander this week and taking the bike to Ryan on the 16th for mapping. We are going to run some dyno tests on the barbarian jumper mod before mapping the power commander to see how they compare. This should be interesting since Ryan is one of the best tuners around. I would really like to see someone with the Muzzy 4/2/1 full header and muffler system and the air box mods (either like WW's or mine & cdogman's) dyno the bike with a properly mapped power commander. I have no doubt WW's more radical air box mod is more effective for max power potential than my more conservative approach.
