In order to clarify the routes listed on the CFR '09 website I will list the waypoints for each of the three rides. The text currently posted simply describes the routes to whet your appetites.

Ride #1 - Nakusp - New Denver - Kaslo - Balfour - Nelson - Crescent Valley - New Denver - Nakusp.

Ride #2 - Nakusp - New Denver - Nelson - Creston - Kootenay Bay - Balfour - Kaslo - New Denver - Nakusp

Ride #3 - Nakusp - Fauquier-Needles - Vernon...and return.

The DH links on the Rides page were provided by a CFR '09 Sponsor - Destination Highways BC. The authors each rode over 20,000 km/12,500 mi. to research and evaluate southern BC's best motorcycle roads; they provided their video links so you can sample the various roads you'll be riding.

There are lots of great rides in the area both short and long and we'll gradually post up more routes and maps so you have lots of options.

Any questions?

Any chance of hitting a deer/bear/elk/moose on those routes? Did any of the DH guys crash while filming those 12,500 miles of riding?

I can't wait! I'm gonna ride to Creston in two different countries!

As a long-time BC resident and former CSC (MSF-type) instructor you will all get sick of listening to my Hill Street Blues "Let's all be careful out there today" **** before this is over, but the honest answer to your question is that when you ride in this area it is always appropriate to wear your "Fear for Deers" t-shirts (as well as ATGATT of course).

When I pre-rode the Kootenays shopping for venues last Fall, I would conservatively estimate that I saw over 100 deer in 2 days and change, (and probably missed another 300 that were close to the roads but better camoflaged). Fortunately none of these were of a suicidal bent... Those of you planning to ride Banff/Jasper and the Icefields Parkway going or coming will see lots of elk, mountain sheep, mountain goats, and quite possibly brown or black bears (grizzlies are really shy). Speed limits on the major highways in those areas are often reduced to 70kph (45mph) for the stretches when/if those animals are on the move.

Sightlines and visibility should/will govern your FJR velocity, if you'd prefer to avoid animal encounters of the worst kind!

I don't why not if you wanted to.... but I'm not sure why you would want too.

Ditto on what Dave said. The visual is critical. The last time I rode Kasey's Ride #3, I came off the ferry heading towards Vernon. No cars in front of me,( think you) for 25 minutes. Some very sweet twisties to be feasted upon. I rounded a corner to see a Cow Pie in the opposite lane, slowed to consider the source, just enough to miss a Hereford cow and her 400lb calf on the next apex. If that **** hadn't been on the road, I would have been the **** on the road ten seconds later. Yes, do be careful out there.

PS. The White Tailed forest rats in this neck of the woods are BIG, think Montana but north!!
