Today I received this in an email from the Superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial:
But this will just free us up to get an early start on Saturday, riding some of the GREAT bike roads in the Black Hills!
This is a setback, since I know several people were planning on doing this. I can sorta understand Mount Rushmore's position, because as the folks know who did the hike last year, it is no piece of cake. There is no trail of any kind, other than the last part which is a staircase with what, 200+ steps? It is steep, going cross-country, and hikers have to scramble over pine needle covered boulders all the way up. I am not surprised that someone broke their ankle.Greetings Bill, got some bad news for you, we will not be able to accommodate you and your group this year, we had an accident on the hike, where an individual broke their ankle in two places so that has put a damper on our plans at least until the rest of the year and until we get this matter settled.
Sorry for the bad news.
