Changed oil and then bike feels like two cylinders working

The sight glass is full w engine running? How much oil did you put in? I seem to remember the oil level drops w engine running..?
I had the bike on the center stand during the oil/filter change. After I drained it, I put in 4 quarts, ran the bike, stopped it, and added more oil to fill to about middle of the low/high marks.

I think it's showing full because bike is on the side stand.

Maybe too much oil?

Thanks,

Dennis

Do you remember what you did with the hoses when you cleaned them off? If you crimp the tank vent hose closed, you can get some strange results. Running on two cylinders doesn't sound like one of them, but with the hose closed the tank can draw enough vacuum to cause it to deform. So, you might not be able to draw enough fuel. It will be interesting to see if Mom's is currently employing anyone who can help you.

I don't think this is in any way oil related. I bet you could fill the case to the limit and the bike wouldn't show any difference. Maybe in the long run, but not like what you have going on.

Seems pretty extreme for vacuum caps or plugs, and maybe even bad gas. That would be more on and off. I'm betting you either pulled something loose, or just coincidentally a coil or something has gone out.

I hope you find out soon...

Definitely unrelated to the oil change. Dropping two cylinders makes it sound like one of the coils quit...or related to the coils.

Coil Assemblies

Good luck with the fix!

Hm... thanks for the link. Those ignition coil stuff is way up under the tank. I wasn't near there so it wasn't me -- but who knows, perhaps something up there just came loose.

Thanks,

Dennis

If I had the bike here, I'd look at the hoses I nudged and ensure they were clear. I didn't clean them specifically but just cleaned the inside of the fairing with a rag. I didn't think that much oil dripped onto the end of downward facing hoses and would cause any clogging. I hope they (at MOM's) have someone that knows what to do -- I'm guessing if they get stumped, they can call Yamaha and get advice from "experts". Either way, I'm under warranty so not too worried except for lost ride time.

Thanks,

Dennis

Is the filler cap on tight? It runs real bad if the crank is open to atmosphere.
No it doesn't. Don't ask me how I know or the mess I made in doing so!
Either way, filler cap surely was on snug.

OT: I had an Audi S4 and wondered why the accel seemed a little sluggish and opened hood to find a little mess because I forget to put the oil cap back on. Luckily, the hood shroud covered the hole. Never again will I do that again.

Thanks,

Dennis

Let me clarify. I did my oil change with bike on center stand. After I drained, I filled with 4 quarts of oil, ran the bike, stopped the engine, noticed the window showing very low oil, added a little more oil to the upper mark, ran the bike again and checked for leaks -- all on the center stand.

The video of the bike running was after I went a few miles and came back after sensing something is wrong.

I'm really anticipating an answer but have to play the waiting game -- seems service departments (for motorcycles) like to close Monday -- not sure why. The service guy did indicate they like to get the warranty work through first which is a good sign. They know me there and the lady that sold me the bike now works there (plus, I bought 3 bikes from them over the years) so I'm hoping I get more attention.

It's times like this that make for great learning experiences (of course preceded by frustration and anticipation). I'll post the result (if/when I find out).

Thanks,

Dennis

Hi all,

I got a call from the service department at MOMs today. Seems the bike is running fine. The service guy said it ran weird at first and then rev'ed it up a bit and then it started to run normally. He said he test drove it on the highway and it seemed "perfect".

Ok, I'm a little stumped. The good news is the bike is fine -- well I don't have the bike so I can't test it and verify it's really what I would call "fine" but in next few days I can get it (unfortunately when he called, I was not in a position to drop everything and pick it up). It's supposed to rain the next few days so I may not get it back for a few days but we'll see how it goes.

Maybe some bad gas cleared is all I can come up with for some rationalization.

We'll see how it goes.

Either way, thanks much everyone for the suggestions and words of encouragement.

Dennis

Picked up my bike 4 days ago. When the service guy brought it out, he had it running. It sounded normal.

I drove it home -- well, it felt normal too. I did a commute with it (that's 31 miles each way) and a little leisure riding last night -- all seems fine. No sweet smell, no v-twin sound, no anomalies to speak of. I filled the tank with new fuel so if it was a bad gas issue, hopefully it's resolved.

At this point, I'm going back to my normal day to day routine. Either way, warranty expires early June (only weeks away) so I'm going to do a search and call the guy from Alabama for an extended warranty.

One thing is for sure, ... when the bike was gone, I felt like something was missing. R6 is a great bike but it ain't no FJR.

Dennis

Dennis,

I'm always a little uneasy about "we didn't do anything, the bike runs fine!". That hardly ever lasts.

You know, you are in the middle of a bunch of FJR owners. If you post up a time and place, I'm sure you can get some locals to meet you and at least listen to your bike and discuss it with you.
