So I was in picking up some parts and stuff the other day and the service manager asks me how often I change my fork oil - I ask him how often I should? He says every 12,000 kms which I thought seemed excessive - I didn't remember seeing anything about fork oil service intervals in the Service Manual - it seems to only discuss changing it when you have a need to disassmble the forks because you have a problem.

That being said - does anyone routinely change their fork oil and at what intervals?

Rich

BTW - I told the dealer I'd change the fork oil the next time I bought a new front suspension setup :D

In my opinion, 12,000 kilometers (7,500 miles) is excessive. On the FJR, I change every 20,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

God damn it! I just change my motor oil and someone says "change your break and clutch oil," I change that and someone says "change your pinapple juice." Now I ahve to change my fork oil. **** what next coolant?

I change my fork oil once a year. That is about 20K miles. It is not difficult to pull the fork legs off.

The Gen II FSM says to CHECK the forks for operation and leaking fluid every 10 Km, the FSM never actually says to change the fork oil at all. That's just not right but Geezer is probably close to a good schedule, it's not a hard job.

The FSM also says to repack the steering bearings every 20 Km and replace the brake hoses every 4 years. The Gen I is similar, but... the Gen I also goes on to say:

Every two years replace the internal components of the brake and clutch master cylinders, caliper cylinders and clutch release cylinder, and change the brake and clutch fluid

Think of the Periodic Maintenance Chart as a guide, not the Final Word.

I just changed mine for the third time on my 04. I've got 40,000 miles on it, so I guess that's a little over 10,000 miles average. This last time the oil didn't seem quite as dirty, or black, like the previous changes. It probably wouldn't hurt to go a little longer. You're right about taking the forks off not being too hard, but it does seem time consuming especially if you drain the forks overnight.

And I suppose you change your underwear every week? -tea toddler

Wow. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks and all.................

I changed mine at approximately 40,000 miles, and at 91,000 miles, and am currently at 140,000 miles. I guess I am due.

BTW, the teflon bushings were shot at 91,000 miles and had to be replaced also.
