Fred: I didn't realize that, but after further reading, it seems that Lombardi did not claim the quote, and his exact words are disputed. My favorite quote is af course, “The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.”

Many fans don't realize that in his second year, Lombardi led the Packers to the 1960 NFL championship game, but suffered his only post-season loss when Packer fullback Jim Taylor was stopped nine yards from the end zone by Chuck Bednarik as time ran out. According to When Pride Still Mattered, after the loss Lombardi stated that losing a championship game was unacceptable and it would not happen again under his command. (He would win his next nine post-season games.)

Immediately following that game, Lombardi had an opportunity to become head coach of the New York Giants, once his dream job. After considerable deliberation he declined, and the Giants hired Allie Sherman instead. The Packers would defeat the Giants for the NFL title in 1961 (37-0) and 1962 (16-7 at Yankee Stadium), marking the first two of their five titles in Lombardi's nine years.

Lombardi went on to accomplish a 105-35-6 record as head coach (.750, discarding ties as was the NFL policy); Lombardi never suffered a losing season. He led the Packers to a still-unmatched three consecutive NFL championships in 1965, 1966, and 1967; winning the first two Super Bowls.

Now those were some good old days....

There is no question that Mr. Lombardi was a legend.

But the game was different then. Far less complicated. More basics and straight ahead.

It is impossible to say if he'd have been successful as a modern coach. But there really is no need to...

The officiating in Indy has been in question numerous times and there are those who believe it has something to do with the Colts' involvement with the competition committee. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I know I saw a puff of smoke from the grassy knoll <_<

The Pats, by no means, have a cake walk! Yes, this is perhaps the best offense in NFL history, but the defense is NOT what it was with Romeo. The linebackers are all senior citizens now and the blitz schemes aren't as effective as they used to be. What really scares me is the secondary, it has more holes in it than swiss cheese but they always seem to come up with a big turn over when they need it. Then again, maybe I'm conditioned to waiting for my New England teams to let me down :dntknw:

Well...there's always the Bruins

The Pats have the fix in with the weatherman and the freezer is being turned down to the minimum for Sunday's game. We will freeze the balls away from the warm weather Chargers. Fortunately the Colts pretty well tenderized the Chargers for us. Indy had a fumble, two interceptions and put two key passes in the dirt yet still led the Chargers much of the game.

I'm neither for or against the chargers, and I think that was a great win for them banged up and at a hostile house. But I do have one question for anyone listening, What the hell is the deal with Phillip Rivers, he looks like a spoiled brat, everytime they show a close up of him he's swearin, givin someone the finger or making faces and laughing at someone, man, grow up your suppose to be a pro. And the leader of the team, And I didn't notice it last year, I don't think Marty would have put up with it, they have some classy guys on that team, Too bad their quarterback is not one of them. JMO. Stan

Wow. Funny you should use that term: Classy.

I'm sure the Pats remember LT's post playoff game interview from last year quite well and will educate him on what it's really like to be classy.

Someone ought to inform young Mr. Tomlinson that "classy" people don't have to announce it to the media.

Losers that whine about the winning team's celebration antics are clearly NOT classy.

Losers that have anything negative to say about the opponents after the fact are just POOR LOSERS.

Hope they do a better job at it this time...

Well I watched the game from last year between the chargers and Pats.

It was really amazing to re watch that game and outside of a few plays the Chargers really did handle the patriots.

Although I still would like to see the p[ats go 19-0 a sd/ny match up with sd winning would be cool....

especially if rivers and manning both play. since manning refused to go to sd during their draft year....

But the pats a gb playing would be cool too, I like Farve and it would be nice for him to maybe go out on top, but i still would like to see the dolphins historis season buried under a more astounding 19-0 mark..... guess then the would have to welcome them to their street and move over a bit.....

there are just so many intrueging things that could play out in this years playoffs.....

I for one can not wait until Sunday....

i also liked that the pats owner welcomed the p,p and kick girl to fox..........to have pats fan cheer for her.....how cool is that for a youngster priceless

where were they when i was 15 at a bengals game at riverfront with a pats jersey on and getting booed!!!!!!

oh they were not this good............

yeah since the pats are aging.....

may be time for SD to take over as the best team if they can pull this off.....

or what if the younger manning gets a sb ring..... de-throwning payton,,,,, just all the things that could happen this year.....

Let me be the first to say....

WE SUCKED

The score did not reflect the game at all, should have been 33-10....

.....next year.....

Now that was classy. And so was Norv after the game. Pats are on to the Superbowl against Favre the Giants!
 That's funny! I was certain it would be the Southern Slinger, too. Was really hoping because Favre's one of the few who wouldn't be afraid of the Pats' mystique.

Yeah, 'cause the G-men were so intimated by the Pats in the last game of the season. ;)

You gotta admit that every team that has played them close was doing great until a 3rd or 4th quarter mistake -- a holding call, illegal procedure, whatever. But after that first mistake, the Pats seize on it and move ahead while each team seems to lose something psychologically. I think it's because the Pats are in their heads.

woohooo another manning in the super bowl :D
My take on the GB vs G-men upset was that the Packers just let the cold effect their game more than the Giants. Ol' Brett looked like he was freezing to death out there. He was stuffing the heat packs into his balaclava between plays as if the cold was really hurting him. And they did not have a run game to fall back on.

The NE vs SD game went predictably, except that the Pats had to use the running game to win this time. The cold clearly influenced Brady's throwing quite a bit too. Even made passes were off the mark which is very un-Brady like.

But there won't be any bad weather to contend with in sunny AZ in 2 weeks. I'm guessing that the air attack will be the order of the day, but it sure is nice to have shown the ground game. If I were the OC for the Pats, I'd be adding a bunch of play-action looks to the playbook for the superbowl after what Maroney did yesterday.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not betting any money on the Giants. With those damn Pats, if their defense can't stuff ya then their offense kicks your ***. Either way they find a way to win. I sure would like to see that Pat's lose those. :D

Amen, brotha! Hopefully, Eli and the boys learned a little something in week 17. He claims he did, but we shall see.

Your right the EAGLES should have killed them in their house with a backup quarterback and a lot of injuries, the run should have stopped right there. And then the RAVENS had them beat, I could not believe the outcome of that game. If I was a more religious person I would swear they made a deal with the DEVIL!!!
