Sportbike Track Gear is closing out on Michelin Pilot Road 2 Front tires.

No idea as to quantity available, but I was sorely tempted to buy a couple, except I don't need em right now and won't for probably 18 months.

PS: They're on closeout because they're OLD TIRES , Date codes into 2012 - 2013. They claim that they were stored properly, so I bought one. $84.95 delivered.

FYI, from that page:

Important Notes: These tires have date codes that range from October 2012 to May 2013. They have been stored in our Climated Controlled Warehouse here in MI so they are in excellent condition. We have dropped the price due to the production dates being a couple seasons back. Some riders prefer tires with more current dates as they feel the performance will be optimal.

 
I love a bargain, but I know there are plenty of much more tire-knowledgeable folks around here. Gonna wait until a couple of them post up with opinions on this deal. Don't be shy.

 
I would treat tires like a helmet, if properly stored, up to 5 years after the date of manufacture is okay. I believe Shoei says 7 years from date of manufacture, 5 years in use.

If not properly stored (left uncovered sitting on a cold concrete floor) I'd walk away. I'll advise once I have it in hand.

Not affiliated with STG, just a satisfied customer. I got great prices on brake pads for my 05 a couple of years back.

 
I have heard, from several sources, that after 6 years you should replace a tire. (Something about belt separation.) Some of these that are being closed out are up to 4 years old, so they ought to be good for a minimum of 2 years.

EDIT: I googled it, and wouldn't you know, most of the hits were from Personal Injury Lawyers. Well, this one should be pretty much unbiased:

Apart of the belt separation (which is a pretty extreme case) tires compound gets stiffer due to the oxidation with time. This happens regardless of if they are mounted or not. A five years mark is by many considered to be a borderline to replace the tire. The tire will take longer to warm up and stick less to the ground. If you plan to ride back and forth between the Dead Valley and Moab on the interstates I'd go for it. Not much further than that though. But that's just me...

 
20.00 less than Jake Wilson so you decide. Perfect tire for Pathfinder and all his interstate miles.

I'm a big fan of the PR2 and wouldn't give a second thought to using one if I needed a front tire.

I am pretty sure I paid less a while back ago. $248 for front and rear if I recall. They are currently sitting down cellar in a nice cool spot out of the suns rays. No clue what the date code is on them. I will check later out of curiousity. I am into the third season with my PR2's on the 08. I must have a death wish to keep running them. Getting close to canvas time.

They smell new,

I think I paid $246 for a set once...a long time ago. Best deals I can find are in the $280 range. New (old new) tire arrives tomorrow. I'll let cha'll know the date code, I think it'll be fine and I saved almost $40 on the tire. Now If I can only find the same deal of some PR2 Rears!!

Well the only number I can see resembling a date is 002604/2012. Dammik! I will be going up in a ball of flames. Well not really, I don't give a rats ass and I am going to run them anyway.

Dave - Your old PR2 are better than the rear PR2 I just took off my bike - OOPS! Waaay too much slab riding on that one!



To keep it at least somewhat on topic, I wouldn't worry much about a five year old tire that had been stored correctly. If, on the other hand, the tires were stored in conditions where they were exposed to high temperatures and direct sunlight, I would give them a pass. Other than taking the seller's word for it, it may be impossible to tell but at the price I would probably risk it with plans to discard the tire if obviously cracked, oxidized or hardened.

I must have a death wish also. I bought a used Ducati Hypermotard 1100S last fall with 1500 miles on it. The date code on those tires is over 10 years old. 2107 for the front and 1707 for the rear. I have a brand new set of the newly released Michelin Power RS to go on, but I can't stand to throw away the old Pirelli Diablo Corsa 3 tires with tread on them when they show no sign of age. They Pirellis now have 2400 miles on them the the rear is near toasted so its time to find time to mount them up and try out Michelin's newest tire.

Date code should look like this four digit number. The first two numbers are the week of the year and the last two should be the year. This PR4 was manufactured in the 41st week of 2015.

RossKean, I'll never get how you guys can ride a tire that far down. I do throw away money changing my tires out way too soon because of pictures like that.

Wasn't intentional. Just doing some local commuting-type riding and had not checked it for a few days. I knew it was close to the end but was waiting for a tire order to come in. Not my usual practice - I have only seen the substructure on one of my tires on one previous occasion (In that instance, I wasn't familiar with the tire brand and it went away much faster than expected).
