Too bad I can only ride it at work ;)

2007 BMW R 1200 RT-P

Here's my funky ass on it:

The bike's brand new. Put about 100 miles on it today.

It rides great, ans has lots of nifty features, but it's still not as fun as my '07 Yamaha FJR :D

IB,

Wow, how lucky can you be...well it could have been a FJR. You look sharp on it.

What, in your opinion, is the difference between this ride vs your FJR besides not having sirens?

If I see you in Cali, I hope you are not behind me.

Nice upgrade from the HD pictured in your avatar. Can you convert the siren to an air scoop?

I have often wondered why LEO's have open face helmets. I would think the new Shoei flip face would be the perfect combination of being able to talk to people when you pull them over to "Chat," and better protection. Of coure it would be warmer, but saving you chin in a get off could be worth it. Just my $0.02.

You guys with your "full face or die" helmet attitudes really gotta give it a rest. How bout full body protection, drive a car? Can't be too careful, right? Ever stop to consider that a open face helmet is the best compromise between safety and the open air feel that a motorcycle is famous for? And that but for open face helmets, a guy might not wear one at all? Rant over, we now return to our scheduled program, and apologies for the hijack.

PS: An open helmet might also aid in vehicle id, re: taint a Harley in the Av....... :p

Like the knee and elbow protection! But I'd hate to see you in my rearview with the party lights on!

I always thought LEOs needed the open-face for better visibility. Joy-of-riding is not really a good reason for LEOs to use 3/4 hats rather than full coverage or flips. What's best for the job?

I'm also surprised they are building the LEO bikes from the Rs and not the Ks. Then again, I never understood the use of H-Ds--some guy on an FJR can outrun it by 30-40 mph....But WE know that no FJR rider is THAT irresponsible

But the Gixxer, Ninja and CBR guys are!

IB,

How do you like the service over at Irv Seavers or do you use Long Beach BMW? How many miles a day do you average? HB PD tells me about 200 miles per day and CHP averages about 400 miles per day from what I've heard.

Mike's right, that's a Kawasaki KZ-1000 in my avatar. It had just turned 75,000 miles when I switched to the BMW

We use Long Beach BMW to service our bikes. So far, from what I hear from the other motor guys, they're pretty good. Thank goodness we don't have to pay the repair/maintenance bills on these bikes, so expensive :dribble:

I do anywhere between 50-100 miles a day. I don't think those HBPD and CHP numbers are accurate. Maybe they include their trip to/from home as well?

The LEO's I spoke to mentioned the open faced helmets were about having better peripheral vision.

IIRC, the "official" position is the full face is less "personal" when the oficer is "interacting" with the populace. My personal opinion is the flipface or full face would get in the way should the officer need to use his sidearm. The extra second or two could have dire consequences for the officer.
