I occasionally get a rough shift going from 1st to 2nd gear. Don't know what else to call it other than "chunky". It feels as if I haven't pulled the clutch in all the way causing a rough shift. I would blame myself except I have ridden many different motorcycles and never had a problem. Only seems to happen going from 1st to 2nd and only happens maybe 1 in 20 shifts from 1st to 2nd. Clutch fluid was done 5 months ago. Bike is an 06' with only 5K miles. I have only owned the bike 6 months. Would adjusting the shift lever position or adjustment of the dial on the clutch lever help? Is this a problem I should worry about?

Two things:

If you haven't already, change the oil. Put in some fresh,

high quality stuff.

And, shift like you mean it, preferably at 4K RPMs or more.

FJRs hate being ridden like a cruiser.

With only 5K miles, it ain't hardly broken in. Ride, a lot.

Things will continue to loosen up for at least another 5K miles.

What he said....traded my 08 in that had only 38000 miles for a 2014. That bike ran better every mile that I rode it! Hopefully I will enjoy the 14 for more miles than even the 08.

I add a little STP Oil Treatment to the oil, about 1/4 of the bottle, mine shifts like butter.

I've noticed my '11 shifts much smoother with pre-loading, and fast, firm action on the lever

A slow, hesitant shift will invariably result in clunky, noisy shift, or even a missed shift into neutral.

There seems to be more distance from first to second gear, possibly something to do with neutral being in between.

Just so happens i'm due for an oil change, been six months almost to the day. Maybe that will do it. I don't think I want to try a clutch soak on my own. Start with simple first. Might as well try the STP like Ahchiu mentioned as well. More is always better right?

I just ended one of my many periods of clunky shifting. I usually blame it on mechanical issues. This most recent period was on the 013 - the neatest shifting scooter ever - was thinking WTF. The usual solution is getting my lazy ass back in rhythm.

My bike, regardless of miles since last oil change, becomes clunky from 1st to 2nd when it's time for fresh oil. It's the way it lets me know.

I've found STP to be necessary only when cheaper (as in less expensive, not quality-wise) oil is used. My bike can be a real bass turd to shift with Rotella. IMHO every bike is different so don't be afraid to experiment to see whet your bike and your wallet like.
