Hey all you SC folks,

I mentioned this in the "Greenville SC on global "does not suck" list" thread. Thought I'd start a new thread instead of continuing to hijack that one.

Well, it looks like I may finally get to close on my new house on Monday!! Found a place in Williamston, SC. After closing will be heading back to my place in Atlanta for my "weekend". I'll be moving in with just a bare minimum of furnishings on Wed. No big U-Haul full yet... Thinking just a mattress and my tools for now. ;-)

New job has me on 3rd shift working four 10 hour days. So start my work week at 10:00PM on Wed night and get off for my "weekend" at 08:00 AM on Sunday morning. Kind of foils any idea of Saturday and Sunday rides but, <shrug> for the money, I'm not gonna argue. Best roads are usually less traveled during weekdays anyway.

Still not sure when I'll finally make the trip with a U-Haul, so won't be sending out a call for help unloading just yet.

The house has a nice 2 car garage already but the fiance has given the OK for plans to add a SECOND garage. She even likes the plans for the 32 foot long barn style with the loft that will be the perfect man cave. Already thinking slot car track, big screen TV and a kegerator. ;-) Also have a classic COLECOVision game that might still work. LOL Maybe I'll finally be able to get the old Venture and Virago running and maybe even make some progress on the Triumph Spitfire restoration project.

So, just a heads up for all the SC folks. Might have a meet at the new house sometime soon so I can get to know everyone.

Ding! Ding! Does your fiance realize you've made that invitation to a whole bunch of "internet friends"?

As long as it doesn't conflict with Georgia Tech home football games, I'm in!

Actually, I hit the lottery when I found her ! She rides her own bike, LOVES to ride...is an AMAZING cook and LOVES to cook for groups of people...and she's an absolute knock out! ( see my ride report here: https://www.fjrforum.com/forum//index.php/topic/153592-a-ride-around-kentucky-with-an-angel/ )

If you'd be willing to come to the Hiram area I might need some help LOADING the U-Haul when I finally get to that point. ;-) Although, now that I'm on this weird schedule I have a feeling it's gonna be difficult to find anyone who's not working during my "weekends". Think we're planning on using some guys that will load the truck, meet us at the destination, and then unload for us. I'm gettin' too old for this crap.

In the mean time just gonna move it a little at a time. Just what will fit in my truck and sometimes a small trailer. Still have some repair jobs at the house in Hiram before I can put it on the market. Mostly just have to take stuff to storage to make the house look less cluttered. The big "empty the house" move will probably be in August after Carla's last day at her job.

I used to have a T-Shirt I got at Timothy John's years ago when they were getting ready for the GT-UGA game. Had an engineering drawing for a "Dawg Carrier" that cracked me up.

Welcome Ray. I just moved to Greer from Indiana. Moved from a three car garage, full basement to a 2 car garage, crawl space house, so I am envious of your new digs. Sounds like you might be the candidate for a Tech Days in upstate South Carolina

Gonna have to build the extra garage first. But I do have the fiances blessing! Tech day at my place would be a good possibility though. Might help to make working on vehicles fun again. Been doing too much "GOTTA" repairs and not enough "FUN" repairs lately. Although, now I found a shop that can do the work for me.

Took the truck to Milton's Auto service in Easley for a bad wheel bearing. I priced the bearings at Auto Zone at about $120-$150 if I were to do it myself. (4WD Chevy S-10..have to replace the whole hub assembly) Milton bought the part, and had his other mechanic Jacob spend a couple hours putting it on for me. Get this....charged me $135 !!! So I may start taking all my "GOTTA" repairs over to him and just leave the fun stuff for myself. So I'm recommending Milton to everyone now.

Lot's of folks moving to this area!! Where in Indiana? Carla moved down to Atlanta from Leesburg/Goshen area about a year ago.

I moved from what up there they call "The Region" Crown Point, just south of Hammond.

I currently have a nice table lift waiting to get the compressor hooked up so I can use it. My current breaker box is completely full, so I will have to get an electrician to put in a sub panel to get 220 to my compressor. Sad seeing that lift sitting there with no way to use it right now.

Ahh...up there by Three Floyds Brewery! I'd love to make it to "Dark Lord Day" sometime.

Don't have a table lift myself, but who knows... Santa might be very good to me sometime soon. Think I might get a parts washer first though.

Been too long since my Vocational School days or I'd offer to help with the sub pannel. Spent two years leaning wiring but ended up in telecommunications instead. Since that school was in 1974 it's probably best if I leave stuff like that to someone current. My compressor can be run on 220 or 110 with a switch of some wires in the motor but the 110 option kept tripping the breaker. Never did get the 220 line run though. (in my Atlanta house)

Yep...up here on the north side of Greenville. The last three months have been crazy work wise, but hopefully I see better days for riding up ahead. Welcome.

RayW, let me know when you might need a hand. I have a comp day coming, and would sure like to check over some drawings for a Dawg Carrier.

Thanks! I appreciate it! One warning though...Carla does have a piano that will need to come down the front stairs off the porch.

I got that shirt back in 1984 or 85. It's long been turned into rags. It was pretty fun though. Was basically a handle with a muzzle on one end and a thrust bearing on the other.

Same her re: work. Starting a new job....getting a house in Atlanta ready to sell...buying a new house here... Been lucky to be able to ride the FJR to work a few times let alone go exploring or anything. <grumble>

welcome to area. mostly commuting to and from work as well. not ideal riding but some days i take the long way to enjoy it a little more. Nice thing is we have all that wonderful fun roads right in our back yard so no need to have any more than a good day off to get in some excellent riding.

Carla says she was actually BORN in Hammond!

We just fell in love with Greenville! Downtown is AMAZING! We've been drooling over maps of the area, looking at all those FUN roads, for months now!

Since we'll be living close to Anderson, I think our first ride will be up 178 to Rosman, NC, across on 64 to Brevard, then back down on 276. Probably pick up 186 in Marietta and loop back to 178 and home via Dacusville. Been wanting to check out all those squiggly lines on the map on 278. ;-) Just a nice fun, easy loop.

We had kinda hoped to find a house more on the northern side of Greenville, but fell in love with this place in Williamston. <shrug> Oh well...just a few more miles to ride to get to the really fun stuff.

Dear RayW,

So, are you moving to Williamston or Greenville? And PS, Hiram is not Atlanta. It is almost Dallas, however.

I tell folks I live in Dunwoody, and if they don't know where that is, they can ask Google.

Any route that includes Rosman or Brevard is a good one. It will either be squiggly with upsie/downsies, or it will follow a creek with gorgeous mountains alongside. Of course, you've heard of the massive Government cover-up about aliens in Rosman, right? https://goldenageofgaia.com/2011/11/21/mary-joyce-on-the-underground-ufo-base-at-pisgah-nc/

Sincerely,

Uncle Hud

Well...my job is in Greenville but the new house is in Williamston. And...if you want to get picky about it, my address is listed as Douglasville, even though I'm in Paulding county...but I did work in Atlanta, up by Cumberland mall.

As for the route...yeah...that's what I figured from looking at the map. I went to the doctor there in Greenville a while back. I had ridden my bike to work that day so had my gear with me. Turns out the doc had just gotten a new bike and was telling me about some good rides in the area. Even drew a map in the exam table paper. LOL. I snapped a pic with my phone so I would have it handy. Carla and I are really looking forward to exploring the area. Shoot, we're closer to all the good stuff around Atlanta living in WIlliamston that we are in Hiram! I might even get to go to the Walter Mitty race at Road Atlanta finally! We're closer to Helen too. So I foresee a lot of bike rides in our future...IF we can get our schedules worked out. Me being on this weird night shift might put a crimp in things. Maybe I ought to just tell Carla to hold off looking for a job for now.

Interesting stuff about the secret base... I think I remember seeing a story about that place on TV. I think that's the town with NO cell towers or radio transmitters of any kind. Interferes with the radio telescopes....so they say. ;-) ;-)

Another option is to go left on 64 when going up 178, towards Highlands and Cashiers. You can then take 107 out of Cashiers or 28 from Highlands to go back through Walhalla. I did 107 at night once and it definitely kept me awake. Some tight turns there.

Joey.
