My son and I are on vacation, enjoying the twisties in Ohio and West Virginia. We were touring near the border of the two states when I decided to take a quick detour across the river. Going over the bridge I am driving slow, checking the sights ya know, and being followed closely by a Chevy Blazer. We hit a stop light at the other side of the bridge, take a right and see a car dealer on the right hand side just down the road to make a u turn. I see in my rear view that the Blazer is a good ways behind me, just leaving the light.

As I approach the dealer I hit the blinkers and start to brake and am edging over to the right side of the lane. I didn't check my six again (my mistake), and just as I am starting to make my turn I hear a tire squeal! I stopped the turn, and the Blazer flies by me on the right side. Now this a car lot I am pulling into, there is a row of cars parked right at the front of the lot. There was just enough room for him to fit between us, he was inside of a foot of us and probably rocked the cars in the front row! I would guess he was going 20mph faster than us (seemed faster!). Well he made it: he threaded the needle and got back on the road and drove off. The entire incident from tire squeal to him going by was a couple of seconds.

Scared the snot out of my son and I. My FJR is lit up like a Christmas tree: stock tailights, led light bar, and a light bar on the trunk. This thing is bright when the brakes are on. Oh yeah, the light bars are also hooked up to a flashing unit, so it could even be described as obnoxious(at stop lights people tend to park 20 ft behind me.) I don't know how this guy missed them, but he did.

What got me is that he went to the right when my right signal light was on, and he had a free lane to his left. The first thing my 14 year old asked me was why did that guy pass us on the right? The kid hasn't driven a day in his life, but he new it was dumb. As I said, should have checked my six again. I didn't think the Blazer could catch up with me that quick, my mistake, lesson learned.

Off to see the New River Gorge bridge tomorrow! :yahoo:

Glad you and your boy are ok. Seeing the bridge, and don't forget to take the road down to the wooden bridge, will make the close call a distant memory.

Some days it just pays to be lucky. Glad you and your son are OK. I think there are a lot of distracted people on the road and it doesn't matter how many lights you have on your bike or what color clothes you are wearing if the guy behind you isn't paying attention to where he is going. You are right to pay attention to the rear view mirrors when you are turning but it is impossible to anticipate what every idiot on the road is going to do. Don't beat yourself up over the near miss. Just be thankful. I just hope the idiot behind you has a few nightmares so he will be more careful in the future.
