I have the clunk when shifting into first from neutral on my 06. Sometimes it clunks but stays in neutral and then have to do it again to get it into gear. If I push the bike in gear, clutch in, engine off, it hesitates disengaging before it will roll. The lever is on the highest setting, 5. Shifts also seem as if they could be smoother. Think I need to adjust the clutch?

1st from neutral, normal. Sticky plates till well broken in, normal. 800th thread on clutch and clunky 1st, priceless. :D

With all your gear on & ready to go, start it in neutral with clutch squeezed & shift to first the instant it starts and it won't clunk. Or at least mine never has. Then ride away, keeping it under 3k RPM for a few minutes, then go for it. Your bike, gears, & plugs will thank you for it. Later,,, De

Your clutch cable is loose....either that or you are using the wrong type of oil.

Can I say it's too tight and he needs to cut open a slit in the cable line to ease some of the pressure?
