I need some help! I did a clutch soak on 2013 model, put it back together and the handle pulls fine, feels like it always has, but the clutch doesn't work. With the cover off, you can see the pressure plate pull in and all looks normal. Button it all up and start it on the center stand and it just grinds going into first.

I thought I was extremely careful in taking it apart, numbering things, and putting them back.

Did I do something obviously wrong? Does the clutch have to be bleed once it's back together? Is that the step I missed? Or did I just hose something up on the reassembly?

Any help would be appreciated, as the sun is finally shining and it is in the 70's, so it is killing me!

I will assume you torqued the pressure plate and clutch spring to specs, and no extra part(s).

Did you take off the retaining spring (8) and the friction/clutch plates (6&7) behind it? Also, the first friction plate (17) to come off has a different part#, but not certain if it would cause an issue. Here's the breakdown https://www.partshark.com/oemparts/a/yam/50732839f8700218e05b886c/clutch

One of those rings, towards the back, can go in backwards. Isn't there also a retaining "bearing" towards the back that has fallen out before? Sorry, it's been a long time since I've been in my clutch.

Great advice guys! Problem solved!

(Should I tell you know or later that I'm an *****?)

My service manual was at work, drove there to get it, stepped back into the car and the light bulb came on. It was on the center stand, but the kickstand was down. Put the kickstand up, started it, shifted into gear and all was well :D Test drove it, all worked great.

Nothing to see here, keep moving.......

Some times I amaze myself :)

Dude, don't be too hard on yourself, we've all been there....

Sorry LKLD, when I was trying to shift it into gear, on the center stand, with the side stand down, the second I would try to shift it into first, it would grind gears and cut off. Shifting into 2nd would not grind, just shut off. I figured if I could just get it working once or twice, it would free up. I put the side stand up, shifted into 2nd, and it took off. Shifted down to first, it worked fine. Went through the gears a couple of times and nice and smooth. Turned it off, started it in neutral, shifted into first, and it was smooth. Took it for a test ride and it was all fine. Took it for a longer ride and it was buttery smooth. I'm really glad I did it. When I took it all apart, I thought "Well, this looks clean, nothing like some of those photos others have posted with all the gummed up areas, what a waste of time this was". However, that didn't turn out to be the case.

No more "Clunk" when I shift into first, and downshifting is a lot different. Glad I did it.

I put about 50-60 miles on it after that and I'm really happy with it.

When you engage the clutch, the slave cylinder pushes a long rod, with 1 ball bearing at it's end, onto the pressure plate and PUSHES the plate OUT.

Very easy to loose that ball bearing.

Make sure you do the bolts up in sequence bit by bit & that spring plate aligns up properly when you do & doesn't slip.

Hope that helps

So all AOK ?

Nice one, such a simple job that makes a huge difference.

No use soaking as the fibre does not soak in oil.

A good clean of the plates and oil everything up as you reassemble is OK.

Cheers
