Clutch Plates issue?

Hello, just spent an hour or so searching, and I am thinking that the issues I am having could be related to my clutch plates needing a soak, if y'all could read my issues and let me know your thoughts. I am especially interested in your thoughts too on a 'differential diagnosis' of the possible issue with something being bent in the mechanism.

I have an 06 A model with 4375 miles on it. Occasionally, seemingly more when it is hot, the bike will not shift back into first when at a stoplight if I place it in neutral while waiting at the light. If I release the clutch again, and then rev the engine a little, it will then generally go into first. This is fairly annoying at a light, with cagers behind me. A couple times, I had to paddle to the side of the intersection while I go through these steps.

Other times I can only get it into 2nd to start off from a stoplight. I have also ha the gear screen go blank for a few seconds, and then the gear lights uip.

Sometimes, if I make a sudden stop, and I was in 5th or 4th gear, the bike will not want to shift down past 3rd after I get stopped. This is somewhat rare, of course, not that many panic stops.

Is there any TSB for this on the 2006 models? Anybody have anything similar happen to them? Is there a solution to this that won't require me to take the tranny apart?

Sounds, to me, like more of a transmission issue than a clutch issue -- although, admittedly, they work together. If the clutch has no other abnormal symptoms (dragging, rough engagement, etc)?, I wouldn't suspect it as a major player here. Besides, clutch problems (that could cause poor shifting) would probably exist in all gears?

Sounds like things (gears/dogs) are not aligning easily in the gearbox -- which would lead me to suspect transmission hard parts bent/damaged/burred/?

Just guesses on my part...., more data always seems to help.

Engine oil affects (sometimes) clutch operation. If you still feel the clutch may be the culprit -- changing engine oil to something different may be a (sort-of) test to help determine the cause of your shifting issues. If changing brand/type of oil tends to alleviate the problem -- you may be on to something?

And... it's a lot easier to do than either clutch of transmission inspection/repair.

Is your idle speed at or near 1100 rpm?

Is your idle speed at or near 1100 rpm?

Idle speed is att around 1100K. I am not convinced that it is the clutch, as you said, and your logic seems sound that it would affect all gears. Beyond the oil check, what's the next step, an expensive trip for a teardown and exam?

My two (2) cents, and remember you get what you pay for....

I don't think that there is anything really wrong going on with the bike.

These things have happened to my 06 as well as on every bike I have owned.

I believe transmissions are first designed to work when in motion. I don't know for a fact but I doubt that engineers design so that a tranny will shift as smooth at rest as it does when under a load. It doesn't happen often but sometimes you have to fiddle with the clutch/throttle when engaging first from neutral.

As far as getting stuck in 3rd when going from 5th while stopped....same thing.

Lastly, your mileage is fairly low. I think with time (read increased mileage) you'll find that the tranny will shift much smoother and the problem you have will occur much less frequently.

It happens to me as well on last 3 Yamaha's I own. I don't think is anything wrong with the bike.

Once you change oil this will improve for a while.

When this happen to you on the traffic, just release clutch lever and pull it again or move your bike little

bit forward or back with clutch lever pulled.

Thanks guys - i will do just that. going to go out and ride it to work this morning. I will watch to see if it gets worse, which it hasn't yet, and maybe change the oil to another brand, as was earlier suggested.
