Holy crow. Having seen a small forest fire first hand (we were told via a helicoptor with a loud speaker to leave our cottage) I just can't fathom a fire of that magnitude.

There were a few riders from Co Springs at NAFO, prayers going out to all those affected by the fires, you know the pictures don't tell the real story of living through it live. I really don't have anything to complain about in the PNW, yea it rains a lot but I rather be a little wetter and toast.

This is the worst fire season that I can remember in Colorado. We usually don't see many 100 degree days here let alone a week straight. That is right behind Garden of the Gods, beautiful canyon ride up towards Woodland Park. The winds had kicked up to 65 mph breaching a protective fire line from dry thunderstorms. A bad fire year for the western sates.

Keep on preaching, I'm already sold on Colorado. Just can't get the wife to move. :D

Those are some incredible photos. I lived through the fires in Florida back in 98 I think. I remember breathing smoke for a month or so and at one point noting that my coastal town had every road in and out closed as we were completely surrounded. I was't too scared, figured if the fire came I'd go to the beach! No beach in Colorado and those flames can move faster than in Florida with the contours to the land. Scary stuff indeed!

Florida is so wet I'm surprised it could burn!!

That was me and COSFJR. Our house is on the far east side of town, so was never in any danger. We were still in Jackson, WY that day and didn't have to experience the horror first hand. Friends that were here described it as being in Mordor.

The firefighters have done a FANTASTIC job, and as of today, we are 95% contained with 100% containment expected sometime tomorrow!

So sad. Especially the lives lost in the C-130 crash. Incredible pictures, very surreal looking.

Yes, especially with all the pressure to fly the C130. That's an amazing plane, they were around before the C141's I worked on in the sixties. Definitely standing the test of time.
