My desktop takes PC 2700 / 333/ 184 pin ram. I want to upgrade to two 1 GB sticks

PC 2700 is hard to find at a good price, but I can find PC 3200 / 400 all day long for $50 or so.

Question. isn't PC 3200 downward compatible with 2700? 400 down to 333? I know I have seen some that say they are. Is that in general or just specific brands on compatability?

Since the memory you're putting in is faster, then you shouldn't have a problem. I've recently done the same upgrade on my system.

Time for a new computer, your talking old slow computer stuff. You need to check if your machine will even accept 1gig sitcks. We had some E machines at work that would only work with 128mb sticks. Check the specs of your motherboard first, before you buy new ram.

Check this out:

Dell Small Business has their Dimension 9200 with Intel Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core Processor for $649. Shipping is free. Select the Core 2 Quad Q6600 Processor and remove the monitor (select "I will pick 27" LCD").

Specifications:

Intel Core 2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB)

Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic

2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs

80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ DataBurst Cache

Single Drive 16X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) w/ double layer

128MB nVidia GeForce 8300 GS

Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

Dell USB Keyboard and 2-button USB mouse

normal pc3200 should work. Just make sure you pick up normal DDR and not DDR2. The later will definitly not work.

However, Newegg has some pretty good prices. Never buy Ram at retail stores (if thats where you were looking), the markup is horrible since it sits on the shelf a long time. Here's a link to Newegg's 2x1gb in pc2700

The PQI will prollie work, but I've had better luck with Kingston. They also have single 1gb stick of Crucial for around $60. While it might be a tad more then you are wanting to spend, Cruicial is pretty much one of the top memory makers. I've never had a bad stick from Cruicial in all the years I've used it.
