I finally bought an 09 FJR1300a! Thanks to those who had input in my decision. Now, when it comes to the 600 mile service I have a couple questions... I have searched and searched but can not find definative answers as what most poeple are using for engine oil. I'm a firm believer in Mobil 1 synthetic oils, but the FJR owners manual states that 20w-50 is the recomended oil and all Mobil 1 offers is a 10w-40 in the motorcycle specific oils. Also, yamalube does not offer a synthetic oil in the 20w-50. Which oil do most people use/recomend? Also, is the TBS a critical check at the 600 mile service?

Mobil 1 does make a 20-50 marketed for big twins. You will get as many answers as there are kinds of oil and poeple on the forum. Any good oil that is not labled energy conserving will do just fine. TBS usually helps when new although mine was right on the money but it is one of the high performance 03 models.

I run the Rotella 15-40 dino in mine.
Yes get the TBS done.

Yea, what he said.

To be honest, I think my clutch feels better with the Rotella than with the Yamalube. There is also a noticably less "kerklunk" going from nuetral to 1st gear.

Oh ya, by the way, it's half the price of the Yamalube.

BTW, use Pure One p/n 14612 or 14610 depending on if you want a short or long filter, 6 bucks compared to 10 for the Yamaha part.

Ive used 15-50 Mobil 1 for about 70K miles and the bike runs fine. I guess in another 84K i'll know for sure.

+1, Gunny, Ditto.
I believe oils are all just a commodity, with extras, does it really matter?

Really want to know what lasts? Ask SkooterG and 03SilverBullet to tell you they used on their Mileage Kings. I think combined they have well over 350K on the two bikes.

Giant,

Congat's on your bike. I think it is toooo early for synthetic oil at your mileage. Do about the 3-4k with the regular oil and then make the switch.

Many Happy Miles & Smiles to ya!

I just used the Yami 10w-50w semi synthetic. It seemed a little to thick for my liking but summer is coming. I will probably go back to the Yami 10w-40w this fall. JMO

I use Amsoil MCF motorcycle synthetic (10W-40). Here is a well written comparison of several top line brands of motorcycle oil for general reading. As an aerospace engineer, this sort of stuff checks all the boxes I'm interested in (tests & writeup, etc.) and you can choose the type of protection that best fits your driving style and environment. For the comparison Click here.

Cheers,

W2

Motorcycle oil is moto-religion. Go with what makes you happy, and please don't preach to me why I should switch to your favorite brand of "lubrication". I use 15-40 diesel dino, and add 8 oz. of GM EOS at each change, which is probably overkill, but it gives me peace of mind.

There was once a forum member with the road name Jestal. He brought me and a few others to The Light. Then he got his feelings hurt and erased most of the expert knowledge he had shared with us. Since then, I heard he suffered a health event and may not be back to contribute any more. We are left here to wander in the oil desert until He may return....

Some of his good stuff.

TBS was absolutely necessary for my 08 at 600mi. Running rough.

I used Yamaha dino until 1500mi. Now I change my own and run Rotella-T synthetic 5-30W. Just did Hyderseek two weeks ago and put on 2350mi in 6 days. Hard to beat this oil but do your reading and make up your own mind. Mine's made up and I won't switch.

Good luck.
