As reported in the July 2009 issue of the AMA's American Motorcyclist magazine -
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSA) voted to delay the enforcement of the "lead law" that was meant to protect children from ingesting or being exposed to lead and lead based products. The delay extends into May 1, 2011. In the mean time, Congress must act to amend the law, or pass another law that excludes things such as the motorcycle industries products. The CPSA unanimously voted for delaying the enforcement. It appears the industry and motorcycling folks made a difference and the CPSA knew the law caught up many things not intended for it to regulate.
I got caught up in this and could not purchase a carb float valve for my sons Honda CRF150F, he's almost 16, but this piece of hardware was caught up in the bind.
Malcolm Smith Motorsports in Riverside, CA did what he thought made sense and was in last months AMA American Motorcyclist magazine for his pioneering ways.
Thanks to all those that wrote in to help delay enforcement. Now lets get those legislatures to change this law permanently.
