I changed and flushed my cooling system out a few weeks ago and put in Dex-cool (the orange stuff) which was recommended to me from another site. So after doing a search on Dex cool here and the internet, I'm FREAKING OUT! The stuff sounds bad for gaskets and I think I should get it out of my bike.

If I change it out and thoroughly flush out will any damage be avoided since I've only had it in a few weeks? I don't want to take any chances so I should have put what Yamaha recommends and not the orange stuff.

thanks,

jen

I doubt it will hurt anything, the earlier dexcool used silicant ( salt) adn it was very bad, The newer dexcool stuff got away from that. As long as its aluminum safe your probally alright.

I ran it for 2 years without any problems. FWIW
GP
So basically the use of Dex-Cool in motorcycles is controversial and I'd probably be OK running it until my next scheduled coolant change?
I would say so. Or, if you really want peace of mind go buy some of my favorite stuff - the Honda Pre-mix stuff and simply drain out what you have in there, in fill with the other stuff. Don't worry about flushing.

My first flush I put the Dex-Cool in 5 years ago. Then on all subsequent drainings went to the Honda stuff - it's at all the m/c shops where the Yamaha stuff isn't. No problems for me. While due to the horror stories, I won't use Dex-Cool in the future, I reall don't think it's an issue in the FJR at this time. If I were you I would just leave it in until the next time.

And in the future instead of flushing, where you now have to worry about getting all the water out and the right concentration of mix back in, I would recommend just draining and re-filling with a pre-mix coolant of your choice. Really all your doing is refreshing the corrsion protection of the coolant, and drain/refll w/o flush will accomplish that. And the procedure is now so much more simple. If it makes you feel better, do it a bit more often then recommended. It's now so much easier it's not a big deal.

You need to flush it immediately. Start by cleaning it out with saltwater. Let it set for a few weeks to let the salt get into all the crevices where the silicone is. Then, flush again with hyrdochloric acid. Install regular green radiator fluid. Good to go.

Are you SkooterG's evil twin?

No. Odot is SkooterG's evil colon flush.

Just keeping "on topic" with a "flush" thread.

Great advice odot, can you also help mmotochick with chaning the oil?????

If you also change it regularly you should be OK. I used standard Prestone that was for a specific make of auto that didn't have the bad goo in it. Check Jestal's topic on this, post #9. Lots of great reading and opinions.

Good luck.

Sure.. just as soon as I flush and fill the FJR with Dexcool this thread pops up-so I go out and look at the wife's '02 Bravada. The 4.2 inline six is basicaly a huge bike engine-all aluminum, dohc 4 valves, variable timing etc. Never been changed in 90K and just as clean and pretty as the day it went in, no leaks or any corrosion visible. I came back in and had a beer.

Well, you and me both, inbreadwolfie(is that what it means?). I didn't go outside....I just went to the fridge to grab a beer. I'm about eight down so far in the two hours I've started... :dribble:

You're falling behind in your old age odot. I thought you'd be at a 12 pack by now.

Reading this question brought up one of my own, How often should I flush... the radiator

Okay, Oldsmobile Intrigue; kept the Dexcool in for 5 years, drained flushed, refilled with Dexcool, no problems (2000 model).

Again, Oldsmobel Bravada; kept the Dexcool in for 5 years, drained flushed, refilled with Dexool, no problems (2004 model).

And finally, FJR, performed three Dexcool flushes, refills in the last 6 years per the '*******' technical post, no problems (2004 model).

Just saying; your results may vary, but I doubt it.
