Hey guys, not sure this is the right place for this, but I have a question for Colorado riders. My wife and I plan a Memorial Day weekend ride, probably 3 day two night ride, starting in Colorado Springs, or Denver. Am up for just about anything, but wanting to do a nice high mileage two up tour of the area, I will PCS the next weekend, so our last opportunity to see the area. We have done sme short trips, up to Breckinridge, and that area as well as cripple creek, canon city, etc, but looking to go farther. One thing I havent seen is the Sand Dune park or the Grand Canyon, so I am thinking of doing that. Looking for cool B&B and great local flavor eating/beer for our overnights. Any suggestions?

First of all, Memorial Day is early season in the mountains, so be prepared for any kind of weather and temps, and be aware that there may still be lots of winter gravel and damage on the roads.

I'd recommend riding SR 92 for sure. It is west of Gunnison and takes you along the north rim of The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. It is loaded with twisties and great views into the canyon. Traffic is usually light, but the holiday weekend might be busier.

SR 149 between Lake City and Creede is another one of my favorites, and those two towns are interesting to poke around in as well.

One thing I havent seen is the Sand Dune park
If you're talking about Great Sand Dunes National Park/Monument, I recommend taking SR 114 to get there. It's relatively unknown and it's got everything from tight, technical twisties, a couple of mountain passes, and some wide open high alpine vistas to enjoy. It's northern end connects to US 50 (~10 miles east of Gunnison) and it's southern end terminates at US 285 in the small town of Saguache. It's really a gem of a road. It just doesn't lead to the places that most people want to go.

I hope your trip works out no matter where you end up riding.

Hey Bulldog,

My wife and I are planning to be in Colorado Springs by Sunday 24 May 2009, for a 10 day tour thru Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. We will be trailering (I know but it saves tires thru the flat lands) our bikes (we both have 2005 FJR's) to somewhere in Colorado Springs. It would be nice to hook up with some local FJR riders while in Colorado, all though we do have routes hi-lited. Perhaps we could hook up for a few miles or at least a coffee. Please feel free to PM me to coordinate.

We are still looking for a place near Colorado Springs to leave our truck and trailer, while we're on our 10 day loop, if anyone has any more suggestions.

Hey Jim, we will be way far away on SUnday, willl leave out Friday afternoon or saturday AM. Will probably go south into NM due to weather and cold in mountains. I'd offer you to keep your truck at my place but my condo place has 1 slot per condo, and you have to pay for the others, is real dumb... Ill think about it for ideas, but I have found that churches are often welcoming to things like leaving your car parked. CS has a bunch of pretty big churches that may let you do that.

Thanks Steve, for your response. I heard from Stickman and he may be able to help us out. We are really looking forward to getting back out West again this year.

That road is also part of the Continental Divide mountainbike/dual-sport m/c route between Sargents and Del Norte. Like most of the 'Divide Ride' (Canada to Mexico) it's pretty remote, but beautiful.
