Your pain does not sound like it is severe enought to warrent the shot - a swollen tailbone would feel like a hot rod being shoved into the crack of yer butt. Sounds more like it is slightly out of position. Buddy had this issue and his witch doctor ( chiropractor ) did some uncomfortable stuff but has been good since - no more level 2/3 pain

Thanks for the comments.
Yes the tailbone is my nemesis right now. Started about a year and a half ago when I sat on a rope cleat on a sail boat. Was very sore for about a week - then it got better... but still is an issue to this day on long bike rides, airplane trips and sitting on hard chairs in a pub :biggrinsmiley: . Doctor gave me Voltarin (NSAID) to apply topically for a month - but that did not do much. On a pain scale of 1-10 its about a 2 when I do the activities mentioned above. Not bad- I'm just tired of worrying about it and its slight affect on my favorite activities. I can still ride an m/c for up to 8 hours if need be - but I will be sore for a couple days after that. If you have tailbone issues it can become coccydynia which as I understand you do not want. Some folks remove the tailbone in the end. Have looked into modifying my Feejer seat to. That is probably my next step. But I think I'll get the cortisone shot first.

Tanks agin mates!

Medical term is coccydynia--it is indeed joint pain .The joint is between the coccyx(tailbone) and the sacrum. Steroid injection puts the medicine where the problem is,but is not curative if the source of irritation continues. Oral NSAIDS (Ibuprofin) or any number of prescription anti-inflammatory drugs may help, but will take longer to get a response. Stay away from coccygectomy,as sometimes the scar may be as painful as the condition. I've practiced general surgery for 32 yrs. and while orthopedic surgeons generally manage this problem, I've on occasion treated it. Hope it improves soon.
