DC, Placing the 50 cal more toward the center of the FJR will dramatically improve the handling and no heavy fork springs necessary while evening out the tire wear that will save you money for more ammo that can be housed in the FJR side bags!

Now that Illinois MAY do away with concealed carry...

...and the missus and I are taking a trip ON THE FJR alone in July to lonely places in the Canyons..

... it seems like a lot of you guys carry. I don't. But am wondering about wifey's safety...

Would you recommend that I carry? (assuming that I practiced and learned all I can about the legalities and legal implications of self defense with a firearm)

Or would you recommend that I just pray to God that we don't come across the bad people in our FJR travels?

Mark,

I'd agree with skooterg; it may be the minority that does carry while on the bike; I think there have been a couple of polls or threads about that at some point. I have a CPL now (again rather - had one in VA years ago & let it expire).

I've had mixed thoughts of carrying on the FJR (FJR content, check). I have two thoughts. Solo, I feel I can take, talk my way out of, (or give) an a can of whoopass as needed. Someone pulls a weapon on you first, then trying to out-draw them is not going to be the first course of action that comes to mind (but shame on me for letting them get the drop). But that all changes with Annette being along. I will not take a chance on whether or not I am able to defend in a worst case scenario.

Whether or not it involves the FJR, carrying a handgun is about what you are comfortable, confident, and capable of using. It's a very touch / feel sort of thing. Give me an M16A4 and M9 and my confidence is rock solid that I can locate, close with, and destroy the enemy. Civilian life is much more complicated though, but have a G17 that has provided may years of reliable service. It will get some relief as I transition to the subcompact G26 for everyday carry (on the bike or in the truck).

Hope this has enough FJR content to be supportive and useful.

oh, and if I were going to mount a machinegun to the FJR, I think I'd drop down to a M240G - 7.62mm with night optic & laser sight. Less recoil than the M2 .50 Cal, which would mean less stress and wear on both the fork bushings and rear tire. Another viable option is the M249 SAW - a 5.56mm automatic weapon - higher rate of fire, and more ammo per pound. But you're giving up the range that the M2 offers. Decisions, Decisions...

Glad I live in Idaho.

Idaho is an open carry State and you are not put through the ringer to get a concealed permit.

As for reciprocity, Idaho offers reciprocity for ALL out of state permits.

I don't like the idea of having to go through all the BS to have other states recognize my Idaho permit especially when we recognize theirs.

I guess we are nicer than most.

Oh, and just to keep this on the up & up, I love my FJR.

I'm working on a mount for the 50 cal, using the crash bars it puts the weight over the pegs and keeping the CG low and balanced, it will have a HUD sighting system on the windscreen so it's point and shoot.

Mark, MOST of us don't carry while riding. Ride more, stress less.
Gotta agree with Skooter on this as much as I don't want to.

Don't even consider arming your self unless you are 1000% sure that you can use it when needed. Otherwise forget it.

I do carry but that's me and I am comfortable with the options.

Procrastinating this rainy morning . . . constitutional guidance about what kinds of restrictions on CCW are constitutionally permissible and which are not.

Gonna a be interesting to see what what comes out of Springfield after this.

No ****, Karl!!! FJR FJR FJR
I fixed it for ya, Rich. So it's raining up the hill, hm? Nice and sunny here. ;)

FJR!

Thanks guys for the feedback.

I will be carrying personal protection with me on the FJR in case of a worst case scenario...just not sure whether it will fire bullets, or have a sharp edge, or be good at conking people on the head.

Of course, my constant first defense will be my eyes and ears keeping situational awareness uppermost in mind.

That, and not getting drunk and calling some redneck out at 12:30am in a bar I don't normally frequent.

For personal protection a can of Wasp spray is very effective and good for a pretty good distance. No permit required and it works on rednecks.

Wheaton, I have a police grade pepper spray can on a holster on my FJR handlebar for the Crazy Cujo on my street. Haven't had to use it on a redneck though....

It is interesting how the need to protect the wife and family can change a man's thinking. I don't fear enough for my own safety to carry while riding and my wife does not ride the bike with me. On the other hand when I go on vacation with my wife and son, I am unwilling to trust their fate to chance. Anything I can do to insure their safety will be done. Of course, a very sharp pocketknife with a pocket clip and one hand opening is such a useful tool, there is never a reason to be without one.

I used to carry a small can of pepper spray when I was marathon training, lots of "Crazy Cujos" out there. That's the only time I ever felt the need to have something to protect myself and it wasn't even another human that I was worried about. The wife and I have talked about getting our CCWs, but I have mixed feelings. I guess I'm just not ready for that yet.

Oh yea....the whole time I was running, I was thinking about my FJR.

Okay, at the risk of pissing off Iggy, here goes.

WTF is with the idea of concealed carry? The 2nd Amendment gives us the right to keep and bear arms. Doesn't say anything about open carry versus concealed.

If I can bear arms, I'm bearing arms. JSNS.

Now you've gone and done it. Lightning is gonna strike
Nahhhh, it hasn't gone political yet! And I'm typing this while riding my FJR in the rain! Without a helmet! While on bald tires! Can anyone tell me what's the correct tire pressure for my FJR in wet conditions?!

Glad to be Canadian and not have to worry about the nut riding beside me carrying a weapon.

Most of your Northern friends think you're all nuts when it comes to guns. We really like you besides that.

I'm 46 and have never had a gun used against me, threatened by one or drawn on, except for one time visiting the US. And that was a cop who was drew his gun because he was scared I would have one.
