Would you have to replace the whole speedo for a cracked glass or is there a way to replace only the glass - I have a small crack starting in the bottom of mine that goes up about 1/2 inch and I'm sure it will get worse. Thanks

Looking at the online resources page one can choose to look through the fiche yourself from various sources. Look at the "METER" fiche. They give a part number to the whole assembly (over $500) or you can ala carte the "CASE, METER UPPER" with part number "5VS-8353E-01-00". The "glass" is actually plastic and integral with the black plastic.

Try the various sources and you might beat the $76.68 USD I saw on one.

Your Canadian results will vary.....

Thanks Ignacio - this was very helpful - I know see that the black plastic piece and the plastic gauge covers come as i unit and is not to hard to replace.

Well, it's no piece of cake to replace either. The dash has to come out, IIRC most of the front plastic has to be removed to get at it all. Replaced mine shortly after new when a crack started up the right side into the display face.

Since you are going to pull the instruments you may want to replace all the dash light bulbs.

If'n this were me...

I'd start watching eBay for a dash cluster. They show up there from time to time. Buying one intact might not keep your ODO accurate but the PIA factor would be much less.

Somewhere on the Internets is the service bulletin for the 06 Odometer swap, for the 17 mpg issue. It details how to swap these out.

I can't imagine replacing the glass, but I suppose you can do it.

Not very difficult....just time consuming since you have to remove the nose. I could do it in about 2 hours if somebody put a stopwatch on me. Probably 4 hours for a first-timer.

The inside of my Tach's glass is fogged up a bit some days when I start out on a ride, then seems to clear. Is there an easy cure for that without taking much apart or drilling a hole in it? I've never had it apart but suspect it was assembled on a humid day. Of course this assumes the unit is air tight. So...if you do change the bulbs, is there any concern about the humidity when reassembling? Sorry if this was already covered, just seemed appropriate.

It's not totally airtight. No gaskets as you can see from the pictures. Plastic on plastic. It is designed so driving water won't get in it though. But if you have condensation...I wonder if you've gotten water in it somehow. I would want to take it apart and see.

Yes, I'll add it to my winter bike projects. Although the bike has only see rain one time and has never been 'hose washed' the garage is very humid in the winter time. At times, condensation water runs off of the bike, even under the cover. This occurs on the days when there is a drastic temperature change.

Interesting. My 05 glass was similarly cracked by Capitol Yamaha when it was in their shop. At first they said they would fix it but they later reneged. I took it to Roseville Yamaha and found out why -- the entire top dash panel had to be replaced as one unit! [$750.00!!!!]. Yamaha took care of it on my YES warranty. So . . . I have a nice new panel with new glass . . . and a new odometer [which can be a pain] and all the other gizmos that go with it.

If you are going to order a new part, I would buy from the U.S. Ship it via USPS priority post or air mail. You will only incurr a $5 fee from Canada Post and GST if the amount is higher than $60. There is no duty on motorcycle parts from the U.S. Any way you look at it, it's way cheaper than buying anything in Canada.

Drill a small hole at the crack's end to terminate the crack, then fill the hole with clear silicone.

Then just ride.

Damn, SkooterG would be soo proud of me! :yahoo:

Take it apart and ship me the dang thing. I'll make ya a new one for less than half the price.

Betcha.
